Jo Nagai was raising swallowtail butterflies at his home in Kobe, Japan, when he noticed something odd. The ones he had looked after as caterpillars seemed to recognize him. Wild butterflies fled. His didn't.
He was in second grade. He wrote a four-page letter to Dr. Martha Weiss, an entomologist at Georgetown University who had studied whether moths could retain memories through metamorphosis. He asked if she could help him design a version of her experiment for butterflies.
She said yes.
Using a muscle therapy device, Jo trained caterpillars to associate the scent of lavender with a mild vibration. When the caterpillars became butterflies, 70 per cent of them still avoided the lavender. Their brains had been completely rebuilt during metamorphosis. The memory survived anyway.
Then he bred them.
The offspring, which had never been trained, also avoided lavender. So did their grandchildren. Without ever experiencing the vibration, two generations of butterflies inherited an aversion to a scent their grandmother had been taught to fear.
Jo documented it all in a 33-page research paper and presented his findings at the International Congress of Entomology in Kobe in 2024. He was 10.
A second grader wrote a letter to a Georgetown professor, and together they found evidence that butterflies can pass memories down through generations.

GASPROM CRASHING: Russia’s Gazprom is struggling. With the ₽ Rouble pegged at just 1.2 US cents-- it has a share price of ₽ 84.85-- or a little more than a buck ($1.10). This makes it among the lowest-priced major oil & gas companies in the world on a per-share basis.

Finland is beefing up its airspace security with a €400M–€500M purchase of Saab’s state-of-the-art GlobalEye AWACS aircraft. 🇫🇮🇸🇪✈️
Saab CEO Micael Johansson tells Iltalehti why GlobalEye easily outperforms Russian systems:
Track over 2,000 targets simultaneously (including low-flying stealth drones & cruise missiles).
Battle-proven in the Persian Gulf, where it successfully detected Iranian attacks under heavy electronic jamming.
Built to operate in GPS-denied, high-threat environments.
When keeping a watchful eye on a unpredictable neighbor, early detection is everything. Finland is not taking any chances. 🛡️ #Finland #Saab #GlobalEye #Defense #NATO
🇺🇦🇫🇷 Ukraine intends to purchase four SAMP/T NG batteries, five GM400 radars, one GF300 radar, and one Kronos radar from France with funding provided through the European Ukrainian Support Loan (USL).
The purchase also includes the temporary delivery of two SAMP/T batteries to Ukraine, which will be returned to France when the ordered SAMP/T NG batteries are delivered.
The first SAMP/T NG battery will be delivered to Ukraine in 2027, but the GF300 radar of that battery will already be delivered before the end of the year.
All five ordered GM400 radars are to be delivered by the end of 2027. Alongside this, France and Italy agreed to divert further ASTER 30 missiles from existing agreements with EUROSAM to Ukraine funded through the USL.
Additionally, Ukraine has been granted a production license for the ASTER 30 air defense missile, production for which will be set up through the end of 2026 with production to start as soon as possible.

Nuclear miniaturization can take a decade or more
Iran has never even tested an implosion device...and don't be naive to think any country would give it all to them
This is a comment from someone who knows absolutely nothing about the Iranian industry in the last 30 years. Iran’s missile program has absolutely nothing to do with China.
Iran will not become a North Korea on steroids. This is already happening, and the entire model of Iranian fortifications is based on similar North Korean projects.
Iran is already an ambiguous nuclear power. They have the technology, the uranium, and the dual-use missiles to carry warheads. Miniaturization of the warhead with North Korean support would not be a problem. If the bomb has not been made yet, and I have my doubts, this happened purely due to political will.
