The name “Jesus” in Greek is Ἰησοῦς, which is derived from the Hebrew name Yehoshua, which in English is written as Joshua. In later Biblical Hebrew, it was often shortened to Yeshua.

If you follow the historical development of the name across the centuries, we thus get:
-early biblical Hebrew: Yehoshua (=Joshua)
-later biblical Hebrew: Yeshua (or Y’shua)
-Greek: Iēsous
-Latin: Iesus
-Modern English: Jesus

The Hebrew name is based on the verb yasha (ישׁע), which means to save, deliver, or rescue. When God “yashas” in the OT, it’s almost always a physical, earthy, tangible rescue, not a spiritualized or abstract salvation. He “yashas” Israel from her enemies. He “yashas” from death. He “yashas” from sickness, plagues, and famine.

As we saw in one of the chapters we read today in Bible in One Year (https://t.co/XxNvEtNH7e ), when the Messiah is born, he is given the name Jesus “for he will save his people from their sins,” (Matthew 1:21).

Given the Hebrew background of the name, and the activities of Jesus in his ministry, the word “sins” must be understood broadly, as in the effects of sin in a fallen world.

Jesus does save us from our sins (as in transgressions of the Law), but he also saves us from sickness, demon possession, despair, and death. He comes to save us entirely, physically and spiritually, for he delivers the whole person. “The entire ministry of Jesus was thus a commentary on his name,” (Marvin Wilson).

In him, this one who embodies God’s salvation, we are healed, rescued, saved, delivered—the full revelation of which will come in the resurrection of all flesh.
