Sad to see so many others facing similar issues trying to break into the heritage sector. Thank you all so much for sharing, supporting, and advising. I'm so sorry. Something must change; if I ever manage to hold any position of power I promise to work to fix things.
PLEASE NOTE: I definitely should have added this earlier. The museum has promised reimbursement for my travel (when the system is set up). This is by no means a criticism of them- they are fab- but of the impossible environment of struggle and classism in the museum industry.
LONG EMOTIONAL THREAD WARNING re. the state of museum employment. Being incredibly vulnerable here, but I’m starting to think that perhaps my dreams of working in the museum sector ought to be put on hold for a time. This is a text which I had to send yesterday. (1/11)
I’ve never been a quitter but I literally cannot afford to do this any longer. In branching out, I hope to eventually get paid decent money to gain experience which one day I’ll be able to bring back to museums. Until then, watch this space. (11/11)
@Miss_RosieRW Thank you so much- please keep them crossed until Wednesday afternoon (if not too inconvenient). Will remember this when approaching the interview! You're so right; very grateful to have such a fabulous community of heritage people on here! Thanks Rosie!
Might any of you lovely people be able to offer some advice to a very excited newbie on their first interview since grad? Fab museum, Collections Assistant role, interview comprises of 10 minutes object handling practical, 30 mins of questions. NOT asking for a friend, eeee! 👀🙏
@flammen1 Oh no- what an opener! Sometimes it's so hard to sell yourself... never mind on the first question. Will have a think about this. Thank you so much!
@Charlie_Pratley I'd never heard of the SIR approach before but will definitely think about that when answering. It's so easy to go off on a tangent and end your answer with a 'so... yeah'. I think bringing the answer back to its relevance to the role is a fantastic idea. Thank you Charlie!
@rob_lewis_esq Great advice, Rob. Just making my way through the Museum of London's resources. It's fantastic what's out there when you look. Thank you for this!
@SarahMuseums @MusDevEM This is a fantastic set of films. Luckily managed to get them watched quite recently. Thank you so much for recommending Sarah; so helpful!
@LynseyFair Luckily I'm a bit obsessed with the museum I'm interviewing for, although that only increases the nerves haha! Thank you Lynsey, I'll remember to specify my answers and work with the experience I have!
