I’m currently building my personal wishlist of Europe’s most beautiful hidden gems. No mass tourism, no rush — just places that truly move me: quiet villages, stunning nature, rich history, and authentic local stories.

For now, I’m doing research and sharing why certain spots speak to me so much.

Whether it becomes a real slow roadtrip one day… we’ll see.

Hidden Gem #3 – Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

The best time to visit is from May to October. In summer the water is warm enough for swimming, while late spring and early autumn offer beautiful light, green landscapes and fewer visitors.

For me Lake Ohrid represents exactly what I’m looking for on my roadtrip: a place where nature is still dominant, history is palpable, and you can truly slow down and reconnect.

Hidden Gem #3 – Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

Because of its great age, Lake Ohrid developed its own unique ecosystem with many endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. At the same time it has been a cradle of civilization for thousands of years — from ancient Illyrians and Romans to Byzantine monasteries and Slavic culture.

Standing here you feel both the immense power of nature and the layers of human history. It’s one of those rare places where time feels almost tangible.

Hidden Gem #3 – Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

Lake Ohrid is without doubt one of the most impressive natural wonders I have on my European roadtrip wishlist. This ancient lake, shared with Albania, is one of the oldest in the world — over 2 million years old. What strikes me most is the almost unreal clarity of the water and the way the mountains dramatically rise around it.

I can already imagine standing on the shore, hearing the gentle waves, smelling the fresh mountain air mixed with pine, and feeling that deep sense of peace you only get in places that have existed long before us.

Hidden Gem #2 – Galičnik, North Macedonia

Today Galičnik remains remarkably well preserved. Walking through its quiet streets, surrounded by stone houses and breathtaking mountain views, gives you a rare glimpse into a way of life that has almost disappeared in modern Europe. It’s a place where time moves slower and tradition still matters.

Hidden Gem #2 – Galičnik, North Macedonia

Galičnik’s history is deeply tied to its people’s resilience. For generations, the villagers lived a semi-nomadic life, spending winters in the lower valleys and summers in these high mountains with their flocks. This lifestyle created a unique culture that is still visible today in the architecture, traditions, and strong community spirit.

The village is especially known for the famous Galičnik Wedding, a spectacular three-day traditional festival that has been celebrated for over 100 years and attracts visitors from all over the Balkans.

Hidden Gem #2 – Galičnik, North Macedonia

High in the rugged mountains of Mavrovo National Park lies Galičnik, one of the most authentic and well-preserved traditional villages in the entire Balkans. This mountain settlement, built almost entirely of stone, has stood for centuries as a living monument to the old ways of life in North Macedonia.

The village was once famous across the region for its skilled stonemasons and builders, who were sought after for major projects throughout the Ottoman Empire. Many of the beautiful stone houses you see today were built by these master craftsmen.

What makes Matka truly special is how untouched it feels. You can take a peaceful boat ride through the canyon, explore hidden caves, or hike along trails that offer stunning views at every turn.

The area is also rich in biodiversity and has been a beloved escape for locals for generations. It’s the perfect place to slow down and reconnect with nature.

Just a short drive from Skopje lies one of North Macedonia’s most breathtaking natural treasures: Matka Canyon.

The Treska River has carved a dramatic gorge through the mountains over millions of years, creating steep limestone cliffs that rise high above the emerald-green water. Ancient monasteries cling to the rocks, adding a deep sense of history to this wild landscape.
