Let's say someone else saw the Sonic Omens devs get away with monetizing their game and did the same. Someone else then saw both games do the same thing and decided to make a part of their game Patreon exclusive

They're funded by Patreon, and previous demos were Patreon only. This means they're making money from Sega's IP, which is VERY dangerous for the fangame scene, and may drive Sega towards Nintendo-style takedowns.
