What happens to workers when machines get smarter and faster? It's a question that feels urgent right now. It also felt urgent in 1930. That year, one of our September issues featured an essay wrestling with exactly that tension, warning that technology might either serve as a "Messiah" bringing ease and plenty, or as a "Frankenstein monster" forcing workers to produce "brick without straw on an empty stomach."

The parallels to today's AI and automation debate are impossible to ignore. We pulled it from the archives this Labor Day as a reminder that American industrial workers have navigated this question before, and met every disruption with the same resolve that built the industry.
