How Did the Sentinel's Resonator Xuanqing Die? & Second Awakening Mechanics
Before the tragedy of the Threnodian attack, the Moon Fox Sentinel had Xuanqing, who was chosen as her Resonator to resonate with the Sentinel.
Through the sequence of memories unlocked via the Feeling Capsule, we are able to look back at Xuanqing's life, her interactions with society, the people she knew, her personal relationship with the Moon Fox Sentinel, and her everyday life before the tragedy.
Then, a major problem emerged as the TD threat escalated and the situation deteriorated. When the attack began, Xuanqing tried to save as many people as she possibly could, pushing herself to her absolute limit.
The problem was that there were simply too many people who needed to be saved, while her time and power were limited. Xuanqing eventually chose to push herself even further and decided to attempt a process known as Second Awakening.
She knew that the process had a very high chance of failure, but she insisted on overclocking herself in an attempt to stop the enemy. Eventually however, neither her body nor her Resonance could withstand the burden.
Her body was unable to contain the enormous frequency load coming from the Sentinel, causing her frequency to explode like a big frequency bomb. This explosion was powerful enough to stop the TD assault while leaving the surrounding area exposed to her frequency for three days.
So, how exactly does Second Awakening work?
To understand Second Awakening, we first need to start with the First Awakening. In Resonator theory, a person becomes a Resonator when they experience contact or resonance intensity with a material or information whose frequency is compatible with their own.
From this process, a Forte emerges, the Resonance ability that becomes characteristic of that individual. The Forte itself is closely related to the Resonator's frequency structure.
Once someone becomes a Resonator, they have a certain stable limit. They can increase their use of their Forte, but that does not mean their capacity is unlimited. There is a point where forcing Resonance output beyond its stable threshold causes the frequency pattern to become unstable. This is where Overclocking comes into play.
Second Awakening is not simply about being able to contain a greater frequency capacity and output more energy. It also involves pushing the Resonance system beyond its normal configuration until a new change or activation occurs.
However, Second Awakening ≠ Overclocking, even though the two are closely related.
Overclocking is the state in which a Resonator forces their Resonance ability beyond its stable limit. Second Awakening, on the other hand, is a result or transformation of Resonance that can emerge when certain conditions are met, particularly when a sufficiently strong frequency collision occurs.
Research conducted by the Court of Savantae proposed the hypothesis that two frequencies currently resonating with each other could be deliberately forced into collision. This collision produces a much more extreme state than a Resonator simply using their own Forte.
Experiments involving the Chronosorter then provided evidence that frequency collisions could indeed produce an increase in Resonance Ability.
The Chronosorter had to operate under a condition they referred to as overdrive, which is analogous to Overclocking in humans. Their research eventually concluded that this excessive state might be one of the keys to triggering Second Awakening.
Second Awakening can be compared to overcoming a bottleneck between PC components.
For example, imagine having a high-end CPU that is already capable of performing at its maximum potential, but pairing it with DDR1 RAM. The RAM becomes the bottleneck. If you want the system to achieve 100% data transfer between the components, you need to buy a new one and replace it with something comparable, such as DDR5.
But then, what else do you need? You need a motherboard that actually supports the DDR5 standard and has a compatible memory interface capable of utilizing its full potential.
The CPU itself already possesses enormous processing power, but the RAM and memory interface cannot provide enough bandwidth to allow the CPU to operate at its maximum potential. As a result, the CPU itself is not inherently weak simply because the RAM is inferior. Rather, the system as a whole is incapable of keeping up with the CPU's capabilities.
The same concept can be applied to a Resonator after their First Awakening. The Resonator already possesses their Resonance ability and Forte, but there is still a limit to how far they can synchronize themselves with a frequency that is vastly greater than their own.
A Sentinel possesses a frequency on a scale and level of complexity far beyond that of an ordinary human.
So why does the process of Second Awakening require permission from an Arbiter?
So a sufficiently powerful frequency is simply too violent and too difficult to control, as Hsin herself stated. The basic purpose of the Arbiter is therefore to increase the chance of successfully undergoing Second Awakening.
The Arbiter does this by condensing the big frequency and compressing it into a form that can enter a smaller vessel before releasing it gradually. This allows the Resonator to slowly synchronize with the frequency in a controlled manner and increases the likelihood of a successful Resonance.
We have already seen this process with Jinhsi.
The outcome of Second Awakening can essentially be divided into three possibilities: death, survival, or a power-up.
The presence of an Arbiter does not guarantee success. It simply makes the chances significantly higher. You could think of it this way, without the Arbiter's permission and intervention, the chance of success might be something like 1 in a million, whereas with the Arbiter's involvement, the odds could become something closer to 50/50.
This is the process a Resonator normally has to go through when attempting Second Awakening.
However, there is one exceptionally talented and extraordinarily gifted Resonator whom we have only just witnessed reaching this point, Cantarella. She achieved Second Awakening without an Arbiter's permission.
Cantarella was the only person among the generations of Fisalia candidates who managed to reach the conditions necessary for Second Awakening through the Tyrvine sword.
For generations, previous Fisalia candidates underwent various insane Divine Trials. They poisoned themselves and attempted to survive exposure to deadly toxins. They also attempted Overclocking by resonating with the Tyrvine sword. Yet they all failed.
Cantarella was the only one in her generation who ultimately managed to reach that point. This is why she was able to obtain her Second Awakening frequency.
And this brings us back to the beginning, why do Sentinels need a "Anchor" especially a Resonator with a Second Awakening frequency?
Imagine there is a Sentinel operating at 100% of its full power. Then, that Sentinel has a Resonator capable of duplicating its frequency with complete accuracy.
That means there are effectively two identical frequencies.
But the Resonator needs to undergo Second Awakening in order to reach that state.
In Cantarella's case, during the tragedy at Avinoleum involving the corrupted Imperator, Cantarella awakened into her Second Awakening state when she touched the Imperator's sword, or rather, a fragment of it.
The moment this happened, the Imperator's power essentially manifested within Cantarella at 100% frequency compatibility.
Cantarella immediately resonated with the Imperator.
Through that connection, she received a vision and realized that the Imperator was in trouble and that Rinascita was heading toward chaos.
She then transferred her Second Awakening frequency to the out-of-control Imperator, allowing Imperator to reclaim its authority. In the end, the Imperator was able to seal both Leviathan and itself, together with Fleurdelys.
Cantarella's case demonstrates that Second Awakening does not absolutely require permission from an Arbiter.
She managed to achieve Second Awakening after generations of Fisalia candidates had failed, demonstrating an extraordinary level of Resonance talent and compatibility. However, she then consciously relinquished that Second Awakening power and returned it to the Imperator.
So, Cantarella can essentially be described as someone who broke through the bottleneck, only to ultimately choose not to retain the result.
