Foot and a half deep snow drifts meets the Gulf of Mexico in Cameron Parish Louisiana. I can’t say I ever even imagined such a thing happening. Last time I was here at this beach was hours before Hurricane Laura devastated this coastline. #lawx#blizzard#snow
Attention, students: Ready for hands-on undegrad marine research? #UDel is offering a @NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program for 10 weeks this summer, from June 2 to August 8, at UD's coastal campus in Lewes, DE. /1
Shoals is still accepting applications for our 10-week Undergrad Research Internships! Fun and meaningful research topics to choose from. Stipend and room and board included. Find out more here.
However I do think we need further efforts to reduce barriers and increase involvement of under-represented groups so that people arent getting left out.
Im not dissuaded by this:
Effort to get undergrads involved more and earlier are paying off.
I have undergrads with national meeting presentations and a few with papers
In part bc I mentor students on what they need to both be competitive and help ensure their success
Started reviewing PhD applications this year, and while I expected it, I am still blown away by the students' achievements before starting their PhDs. The 2015 version of me wouldn't have even made it past the first round.
Starting the new year and first day back at work with a bang….. a flat tire and a check engine light within my 10 minute drive to work. I think this is the cosmos telling me, not enough relaxation was had this break

The dynamics of the Louisiana coast are crazy. Huge mats of hornwort that were there this summer( and were so thick I lost a 3ft piece of pvc marker that I tried to place 1.5ft from me are now just gone.) Still got Lilly pads though. Doing SAV here is hard .....
Come be my colleague! We are hiring! I think its one of the rare places where research with undergrads and master students is balanced with a not ridiculous teaching load. Very collegial and congenial dept!

As many of my students are going into health field, Im slowly adapting my ecology lectures to show how ecological principles are being used in healthcare.
Side problem: Rabbit holes of new interesting things that I want to learn.
New addition to the diversity-function lecture!
Study (N=200 courses) tested 3 interventions to reduce gender bias in student evals, but none were effective. "Women who were tough graders or taught large classes received more criticism than men with the same grading style or class size." @kimelsesser

I started gathering a list for REUs/Summer research opportunities for undergraduate students in Ecology/Conservation/Evolutionary Biology. Feel share to share with any undergraduate students who may be interested in participating in *PAID* research.
