Most people using AI today are on free plans. While there are millions of paying users, the overwhelming majority interact with AI without directly contributing enough revenue to offset the massive costs of training models, running inference, maintaining infrastructure, and building new data centers.

For years, the narrative has been about how AI will replace jobs and transform industries. The more immediate question may be: who pays for all of this?

Companies are already starting to ask tougher questions about ROI. If an AI tool costs millions to operate, it must either generate revenue, reduce costs, or create measurable business value.

The era of adopting AI simply because it is the latest trend will eventually give way to stricter financial scrutiny.

I also think the market will naturally find a balance. Not every workflow needs AI, not every problem requires a large language model, and not every company can justify unlimited AI spending.

My prediction is that many AI products eventually evolve toward business models similar to the modern internet. Some will survive through enterprise subscriptions, some through premium services, and many through advertising. In that sense, AI could become less like a revolutionary technology and more like another layer of the digital economy, similar to what search engines became.

There's also an environmental side to this discussion that often gets overlooked. The rapid expansion of AI infrastructure requires enormous amounts of electricity, water, hardware, and land for data centers.

As adoption grows, society will have to weigh AI's economic benefits against its environmental costs.

Technology, economics, and nature tend to force equilibrium. The long-term winners won't necessarily be the companies with the most powerful AI.

They'll be the companies that can deliver real value while remaining economically and environmentally sustainable.
