Following the Civil War and the liberation of Black Americans, Colorado became home to black pioneers seeking opportunity in the West. Prompted by an order given by William Jackson Palmer, a former Union General and the founder of Colorado Springs, (1/3)

which prohibited the segregation of schools, Black Americans began migrating into the state in search of stable housing and incomes. While the rest of the country dove deep into Jim Crowe laws and other forms of segregation, Colorado remained fairly progressive. (2/3)

When the Marshall Fire swept through Boulder County in 2021, the fire consumed a number of significant historic sites. A significant loss was the Superior Historical Museum which displayed artifacts of the town's mining and farming history.

Judy Collins is a folk musician famous for her work with the Civil Rights and Nuclear Disarmament movements of the 1960s and 1970s.

Judy came of age in Boulder and, while working as a secretary at the University of Colorado, recorded her first piece in CU Boulder's Macky Auditorium. Collins and close friends like Joan Baez, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, and Bob Dylan brought about lasting social change.

Despite Boulder's tumultious past with the KKK, at it's formation, Boulder offered hope to Black pioneers who were able to establish successful carreers in town. Black pioneers also offered their musical talents to the young city. (1/5)
