Corporal punishment was introduced as part of colonization. In African countries before colonization, corporal punishment was not normal. It was the colonizers and slave owners that imposed this on black and brown families.

Some risk factors that cause parents to resort to corporal punishments:
-impulsivity/poor anger management
-taking their child's behavior personally and forgetting that children don't have ill will
-lack of knowledge and inappropriate expectations for developmental stage
