[Beyond the Office Visit: The Future of Primary Care]

On August 13th, Harvard Associate Professor, Dr. Ishani Ganguli (@IshaniG ), visited our department to share her insights and research on primary care in the United States. She presented the recent trends and barriers to primary care visits, as well as discussed ways to improve the quality and use of primary care among patients. In particular, Dr. Ganguli highlighted the benefits of practical innovations, such as adopting online appointment systems and telemedicine, as a means of improving primary care access both in the United States and beyond.

On July 16, Xinya Mu, PhD from Prof. Francisco Lai's team presented her research at the FMPC Departmental Research Meeting on the real-world safety of co-prescribing Chaihu (Bupleurum) formulas with quetiapine.

She explained that Chaihu formulas, widely prescribed in East Asia, may interfere with the CYP3A4 enzyme responsible for metabolising quetiapine, potentially altering the drug's safety profile.

Using a large-scale Japanese insurance claims database with over 37,000 episodes, the study found that co-prescribing was associated with a 28% increased risk of acute adverse events, primarily central nervous system depression, most pronounced during days 8 to 30.

These findings underscore the importance of screening for traditional Chinese medicine use when prescribing psychiatric medications and call for systematic evaluation of herb–drug interactions to safeguard patient safety.

Reflections on a Family Medicine Elective from a Year 6 Medical Student (Pok Ho)

We are pleased to share the experience of Pok Ho, who completed a four-week placement in our Family Medicine Elective Programme 🩺. During his time with us, he observed clinical consultations at both public clinics and private practice. Additionally, he visited the Yau Tsim Mong District Health Centre, gaining insight into the multidisciplinary services available to the community and the various public schemes in place.
Overall, the experience gave him a better understanding of the role of family doctors and the multitude of services available in the community🌟. If you are interested in doing an elective programme with us, get in touch!

On June 4, Dr. Tony Ko delivered a one-hour presentation at the Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care, HKU, on the theme of "Primary Care and Leadership in Pandemic".

He explained that primary care serves at the forefront of the healthcare systems during pandemics, ensuring early detection, continuity of essential services, and community trust and confidence, while leadership provides the strategic vision, resource allocation, and crisis communication necessary to sustain these efforts.

This talk examines how the integration of frontline care and effective leadership reduced hospital burden, supported mental well-being, and enabled innovations such as telehealth in Hong Kong during COVID-19 pandemic. It also highlights challenges and lessons for strengthening preparedness so that the health systems can be better prepared to confront future pandemics.

[Working with international agencies on global health: my experiences as a researcher and writer]

Using examples of recent work as case studies of health and development, Dr Jane Parry, a researcher in the Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care shared her experiences of working with UN agencies and development finance institutions at a departmental lunchtime talk on May 21st.  She discussed how development agencies bring in talent from many sectors, including academia, to design and execute health-related projects in developing countries.

The University of Hong Kong's HKUMed Family Medicine and Primary Care is offering a Certificate Course on Integrative Medicine. It is co-organised with the Hong Kong Association for Integration of Chinese-Western Medicine (HKAIM).

🎯Based on the "Hong Kong Primary Healthcare Blueprint 2022," the course focuses on breast cancer, menopause, colon cancer, chronic shoulder pain, respiratory diseases, and diabetes and its complications. It is taught by instructors from Traditional Chinese Medicine, Western Medicine, and Family Medicine.

[Evaluating Continuous Glucose Monitoring for Gestational Diabetes in Asia]

On April 16th, Professor Queenie Ling-Jun Li delivered a seminar discussing the potential of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) to improve screening and management of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in Asian populations. With GDM rates rising across the region, current screening methods like OGTT and SMBG face limitations, such as missing glycaemic variability and increasing patient burden. Emerging studies, especially from Singapore, suggest that early-pregnancy CGM metrics could predict GDM later in pregnancy, enabling more responsive care. However, evidence remains varied, highlighting the need for region-specific research to inform clinical guidelines. This seminar synthesized findings from Asian studies and explored what is needed to integrate CGM into routine GDM care in Asia.

Implication: Moving towards personalized management to reduce maternal and neonatal complications.
