But seemingly the best claim to the throne was Lady Macbeth herself, Gruoch. Both she and Duncan were grandchildren of previous kings, but Gruoch's lineage was supposed to be primary ... but Duncan was male.
Sort of makes the character in the play more interesting...
OTD in 1057 the actual Scottish king Macbeth died. Very different than the Shakespearean character, he ruled peacefully for 17 years; so secure in his reign that he is rumoured to have made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land
When Duncan became King in 1034 his claim was disputed because of the complicated way that Scottish crown was passed down and that it would have to pass down the female line.
Duncan and Macbeth each had a claim to the throne....
