@oliverburkeman a genuine expression of amazement (joy, wonder, delight, surprise) feels different to praise rooted in judgement, evaluation and expectation. You have moved me vs you have pleased and/or impressed me.
@porridgebrain 11yo daughter wants to be an entrepreneur. Likes doing secretive but messy experiments (potions, slime, paper making…) also jigsaws and clay bead bracelets. Loves mystery stories and poetry (spoken NOT written) and is a hockey goalkeeper.
@Will_Humphrey Ha! I'm currently circling around the idea of the centrality of the presence/absence of epistemic trust and epistemic vigilance to relational dynamics and emotional wellbeing. This fits right into current interests...
@silverpebble I responded stating I prefer 2 because looking at it after 1 I had a calming and uplifting "ahhh, that's been sorted out" feeling. BUT then I went back and did it the other way round, and I had a muted response to 2 and an enlivening "oooh, something's happening" response to 1.
@_NatashaDevon That emotional distress means there’s something ‘wrong’ with an individual (vs being an expression of a systemic issue or a collective dynamic)
@hcdawes@Therapists_C Good luck with future forays in qual! I’m fascinated by how it does/doesn’t overlap with therapy. Also the differences between academic and commercial qual.
@hcdawes@Therapists_C ... but becomes less reliable if the ‘data’ sought is emergent, difficult, sensitive, illogical, complex, unsettling, or not socially acceptable
@hcdawes@Therapists_C Why? is good for drilling down’ on non-sensitive, straightforward, obvious, known, safe, comfortable, easily-voiced, logical, socially acceptable stuff....
@drvicclarke Thank you! I’m new to academic research after 2 decades as a quallie in commercial market research. This rings very true with my experience in the latter but was unsure how flexibility and personal style played in the academic world.
Please sign this petition to ask the govt to revoke the cuts to global health research. The cuts affect this year’s budgets - budgets which have been used to employ staff both in the UK & overseas, who now risk losing their jobs and years of research.

I'm looking for parents who have recent experience of having a child (8-13 years) see a counsellor or psychotherapist in the last couple of years to interview for my MA research.
@bennewmark That my existing framework for thinking about expectations is almost certainly inadequate. A belief that they can and most likely will surprise me in what they can do and even more so, how they will do it.

@Mrs_Bentos In which case (and you) should take comfort in the certainty that they are not at fault and there has been a mistake/error or something wrong in the process at the other the other side. It’s the teacher’s turn to do some learning!
@Mrs_Bentos There’s a gap between the kids’ and the teachers’ perceptions. I’d apply gentle curiosity about how this has come to be so in both directions.
