1/ I’m an amateur space weather dork who’s been chasing #aurora from mid latitudes for the past few years. Every time there’s a storm, my phone blows up. “Can we see it tonight?” “When should I go outside?” “Is it worth driving somewhere dark?”
@StrmchsrHunterF Incredible shots dude! Had holiday obligations tonight so couldn’t drive up north, and smoke/haze here in Boulder we’re working against me, soooo jealous!
Awesome dude thanks for checking on that! Fascinating thinking through how it might have progressed westward. Looking at my photos and I see signs of westward progression at about that same rate- this pic is of the same structure but with camera pointed northwest, and was taken 9min after the previous pic. So sick
@J_master_caster @Vincent_Ledvina Banger Jeremy! I caught basically the same structure from northeast CO on the same night! I’d be super curious on the time difference between our two pics. Mine was snapped at 9:33pm mountain time
For my android homies! I am still fighting google play store for production access, but the app is completely finished up and already being used by a handful of Android beta testers! If you want to use the app tonight, shoot me a DM with your Google play store email address, and I will send you a link to the beta version of the app!
G3/KP7 storm watch for tonight! I am cautiously optimistic, but feels like this one is worth a #wearesoback
With the possibility of the multiple CMEs we are waiting for interacting and merging before arrival, I believe there are solid chances this storm briefly escalates to G4/KP8 levels, and we all know substorms can and will push visibility much further south than the models and maps say!
My mid latitude aurora alert app, Look North, constantly monitors real time solar wind data for dynamic storm level escalation as well as watches GOES magnetometers for substorm signatures! The app also considers your real time weather and cloud cover, and all of this data works together to notify YOU when storm activity is likely visible from YOUR location. Do not rely on generic static models made for massive regions of the country for tonight!
Not sure where to chase from? I’ve also got a feature in the app called Go North, that pulls from a huge database of publicly accessible viewing sites and ranks them by their cloud cover forecast and northern horizon visibility. Sort sites by their distance to you, and save a site to get forecast updates for the night!
To maximize everyone’s chances of catching the show tonight, this link will give you 2 months of Look North Pro for free! All I ask in return is that you post any good aurora pics you take tonight! Good luck friends!

@sage_astr Thank you! It was from the May 2024 geomagnetic storm, easily a top 5 shot in my life! Crossing fingers for some more nights like that one soon!
