@wclodfelter@natabasso But itโs not about love either. Teachers are not creating structured reading activities or even properly monitoring and remediating comprehension. This would make your job easier.
@wclodfelter@natabasso I believe teachers love reading, but a child does not need to love reading. They do NEED the skills to be functional readers to be successful in our society. When teachers focus on live and not skills, they do a disservice to children.
If you are a teacher still fighting the research of SoR, you NEED to read the findings from the National Reading Panel before saying more. https://t.co/3us81p0Lu2
@wclodfelter@natabasso You should focus on the skills that make up reading. Our students do not need to live reading but they all have the right to be skilled at it.
@mslongpre @natabasso Reading is so much more than phonics BUT phonics is a fundamental skill students must be explicitly taught or there are noticeable holes in both reading and writing.
@natabasso @mslongpre Thatโs because there is no research that supports the positive impact of the cueing system, but there is considerable data on teaching phonics. See the findings from the National Reading Panel.
This summer a fellow reading specialist and I will be holding a reading & writing course for 7-10th grade students. Hoping to get 10 students for direct, explicit instruction for skill development. https://t.co/R16WESyLsG
