15 years ago today: #Patriots OL Dan Connolly takes a kickoff and rumbles for 71 yards on Sunday Night Football.
The greatest kick return in NFL history.
1973 was a momentous year for Texas music. Not only was @ZZTop 's Tres Hombres album released on July 30 of that year but, 18 days later, ¡Viva Terlingua! by Jerry Jeff Walker was recorded in the Luckenbach dance hall. https://t.co/H22rP2Dnri
Three months later the album was released ---- and Texas would never be the same. Here's a tremendous article about Jerry Jeff, the album, and the outlaw country movement it inspired. My advice? Get yourself some sangria wine, kick back, "put yourself back in that place again," and read it! @TexasHighways@michaelcorcoran@garypnunn
Tonight is the 2023 ESPY Awards.
Twenty-five years ago at the 1998 ESPYs, ESPN decided to have Norm Macdonald host.
They regretted their choice by the end of his monologue.
President Theodore Roosevelt and conservationist John Muir on Glacier Point, Yosemite Valley, California, 1903. This photo was taken on a camping trip that John Muir took the President on, to try and convince him to push for laws to preserve the wilderness and the natural world.
Roosevelt returned from that camping trip feeling refreshed and enthusiastic about conserving the wilderness areas of America. Over the following years, he created national monuments, parks, and wildlife sanctuaries, saving approximately 230 million acres of public land for all Americans for all time.
Comanche leader Quanah Parker and his friend Burk Burnett, legendary cowman and founder of the famed 6666 Ranch. Burnett was also, of course, the namesake of Burkburnett, Texas. Burnett's friend Teddy Roosevelt suggested the name for the town because it was situated on Burnett's land at a spot where he and Burnett and Quanah Parker had previously hunted wolves.
Circa 1885 photo of Independence Hall at Washington-on-the-Brazos, captured in ruins. It was here, 50 or so years earlier in 1836, that the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed and where Texas took its first steps into world consciousness. This is the actual structure.
Check out this awesome photo of cowboys getting haircuts on a ranch in the Texas panhandle back in 1908. I'm not sure exactly which ranch this is but I'm sure I love this photo! Taken by photographer Thomas R. McQuillan.
