This Thursday the London Luminaries and Sarah McGrady presents its penultimate talk on those plucky ladies from Ham House who managed to keep thier home from being commandeered by the forces of #Cromwell and his cronies in the #EnglishCivilWar and #Commonwealth years. Lady Elizabeth Murray, Lady Tollemache, later Countess of Dysart and Duchess of Lauderdale (1626-1698), was one of the most fiery and strong willed women on the 17th century. She was a she intelligencer par excellence, skilled at producing invisible ink and writing in cipher. Her sisters were involved with the #SealedKnot, whilst Elizabeth was part of another secret society, the ‘#GreatTrust’ which was particularly active in the years of 1658-60. So successful was Elizabeth that she managed to fool both the Cromwellian and Royalist secret services as to her motives and political loyalties.

Elizabeth was rewarded for her services to the crown after the restoration as on the 22nd of May 1662 a warrant was signed where she was to receive a pension of £800 per annum out of the Exchequer for life.
