The Truth About VP Shettima's Kano Visit
Today, we are greeted with certain mischievous publications in some newspapers suggesting that the absence of leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State during Senator Shettima's condolence visit to the family of the late business mogul and elder statesman, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, amounted to the state chapter of the party shunning him. In the warped sense of the sponsors of the said report, the Kano APC leaders refused to show up for the Vice President because of a crack in the party following the exit of the erstwhile national chairman of the party, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
This kind of thinking smacks of a coordinated plot to rope Senator Shettima into a controversy against his better judgment and full consent. If not, what was the basis of such a speculative report about APC leaders shunning the VP in Kano when what he actually went for in the state had nothing to do with the party?
Senator Shettima was in Kano last Thursday on a condolence visit to the Dantata family at the instance of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. During such visits, it is normal for the governor and state government officials to be on the ground to receive the Vice President, just as they did. There was no official communication to the state chapter of the APC in the state because it had nothing to do with the party.
For the record, let me state clearly that Vice President Shettima is never at loggerheads with anyone for any political reason. He enjoys the trust of his boss, President Tinubu, at whose behest he attends most state functions. The resignation of Dr. Ganduje from the APC—as he rightly noted—is to enable him to deal with personal health issues and has nothing to do with VP Shettima.
I would like to leave a word of caution to media organisations in Nigeria. They should, in accordance with the provisions of journalism ethics, scrutinise their sources before going to the press with such malicious reports that stand logic on its head.
In an era of disinformation and hoaxes that are accelerating and affecting the way individuals interpret daily developments, it is a great disservice to Nigerians to feed them with fake news. While it may seem convenient for news platforms to entertain this type of report, members of the fourth estate of the realm should know that such disinformation leads to a precipitous decline in public trust in traditional journalism.
