The year was 2020- I was a fresh intake in the Lagos job market after completing my NYSC in October 2019.
From mid 2020 to 2021 I was living in Ayobo and was working in Victoria Island. You screamed 🤯 right? Some of us lived that stupid life. My salary was 70k (paid in tranches) - first tranch was 15k paid on the 5th of every month, second was 55k paid on the 25th.
Life was hell, imagine spending roughly N2,500 daily on transport alone because of work. I barely fed, I couldn't do any meaningful thing with myself. I'd wake up by 4am just to beat traffic and get to work by 7am, and I get back home by 11pm or sometimes, 12am past midnight.
I was young, passionate about finance, but my country's reality was killing me. A lot of us faced the same challenge.
Some of these companies you see on the island won't even pay you well and when you calculate all the stress you'll pass through, it's not worth it.
My advice to fresh graduates who are living in Lagos is this, if your salary is not ×3 of your transport cost, don't accept that job. You'll thank me later for it.
Peace
Hi Asake.I hope you’re doing well 😊 Do you remember back in the day when you used to walk past my mum’s stall at Ita Faji market, and we would end up chatting for hours? 👀 I’m Feranmi from Linguistic, and I also helped you sell tickets for your shows at Amphi a few times.
