Staff at Hope Zoo in Kingston spent Saturday securing more than 1,500 animals as Hurricane Melissa threatens to become one of the most powerful storms to impact Jamaica. General Curator Joey Brown shared that the preparation effort was “exhausting and stressful,” but the team worked around the clock to reinforce enclosures and put emergency safety measures in place for mammals, birds, and reptiles across the facility.
Brown thanked the “amazing team” that pulled together to protect the zoo’s animals ahead of the hurricane's arrival. He admitted that with preparations now complete, all they can do is monitor conditions and hope for the best over the coming days. The zoo, like the rest of the country, is bracing for life-threatening winds, storm surge, and heavy rains as Hurricane Melissa moves closer to Jamaica.

🚨 Sad news from Hellshire 🚨
This crocodile was seen alive at the Hellshire bridge on Saturday. By Wednesday, it was found dead in the same spot — its tail cut off, and a rope around its mouth, clear signs it was caught.
🙏 Thanks to the concerned resident who brought this to my attention.
Crocodylus acutus is a protected species in Jamaica 🇯🇲. Killing them is illegal and threatens our biodiversity.

It’s time for a conservation update from the field in honor of National Iguana Awareness Day!🦎
The Jamaican rock iguana — once thought to be extinct — is endemic to only Jamaica and remains one of the most threatened lizards in the world. Since the species was rediscovered in 1990, the Fort Worth Zoo has played a vital role in its recovery. For the past 9 years, our conservation biologist, Dr. Stesha Pasachnik, has led the Jamaican iguana program alongside partners, like the @HopeZooKingston.
Dr. Pasachnik just returned from a month on the island of Jamaica working with local partners to study new lizard hatchlings, catalog existing hatchlings in the wild, engage the local community, grow the headstart population and monitor existing adults. Additionally, a master’s student, Filipino Bruno, joined the group to study survival and movement of hatchlings in the field via radio tracking.
In addition to collecting important data and monitoring lizard health, the team successfully reintroduced nearly 25 iguanas into the wild. Every lizard released is a step forward for this critically endangered species.🦎💚
Kudos to all those dedicated to the conservation work for this critically endangered species! #NationalIguanaAwarenessDay

Definitely 1 of our favorite Jamaican birds of prey, the American kestrel can also be found n North America down into Mexico, the Caribbean, & Central/South America.
Altho sometimes called “sparrowhawk”, it’s actually a true falcon & 1 of the smallest species n the Falco genus
Did you know Hope Zoo also functions as one of the main wildlife rescue & rehabilitation sanctuaries in Jamaica? 🇯🇲
After months of care and attention by our zoo team to get this young male Kestrel healthy again, it’s always rewarding seeing them take off and fly free!
😍🐍 1 of the most BEAUTIFUL native species we have here in Jamaica🇯🇲
This wild Jamaican boa was rescued from a machete in St. Elizabeth and brought to @HopeZooKingston 🐍
Fortunately some wildlife lovers stepped up to save this gorgeous female before people ended its life.
@m3ccamilli0n@JamaicaObserver No it did not! Please don’t try to throw our name into this mess. They were illegal pets that escaped and this has been established.
There was public outrage with the recent loss of several Jamaican crocodiles at the Greater Portmore Sewage plant.

Education is key when it comes to many people’s common fear of snakes & other animals 🐍
The zoo plays an important role in public education & environmental awareness, especially for our reptile critters 😅🇯🇲
I love to see everyones happy faces with live wild animals. @joeybrown876 and @HopeZooKingston have done so much to improve our understanding and tolerance of nature and the beings we share this world with.
Riverton crocodile rescue yesterday 🇯🇲 Was at a different site in Hellshire all day chasing another croc when we thankfully got a call about this poor girl stuck in a hole.
Glad we ended the day on a high note🙌
@HopeZooKingston@nepajamaica@RoostersWorldja
Getting ready to release the Jamaican croc that fell in a hole in Riverton. We had to lift her to the release site, a long walk through the bush. Plus she had no interest in getting at a rooster. Big up to all the people including my brethren who said I didn't big him up, who help to relocate this croc. Lol
