In 1926, the Mexican government tried to kill the Catholic Church.

President Calles passed laws that made it illegal to wear a habit, banned public worship, and shot priests in the street. They thought the faithful would cower.

Catholics were treated as criminals. On July 25, the bishops suspend all public worship to protest the regime. On August 1, the anti-clerical laws take full effect. The persecution has begun.

The government declared war on the soul of Mexico.

Instead of cowering away the people rose up. Peasants, farmers, and students formed a ragtag army called The Cristeros. They were outnumbered and outgunned.

They didn't have a battle cry for country; they shouted "¡Viva Cristo Rey!" (Long live Christ the King). They marched into machine-gun fire holding banners of the Virgin of Guadalupe. They held processions before battle. Some went to their death praying the Ave Maria.

They proved that you can take a man’s life, but you cannot kill a faith that is willing to bleed.

Their weapons were few. But their saints were many.

St. José Sánchez del Río, Age 14: Tortured, feet slashed, stabbed to death. He only cried louder: “¡Viva Cristo Rey!”

Blessed Anacleto González Flores: Layman, catechist, lawyer, tortured and martyred for resisting tyranny.

Blessed Miguel Gómez Loza: Peaceful governor of Jalisco, executed for defending the Church.

The Church in Mexico still bears the scars.

The state never repealed the anti-clerical laws, only agreed not to enforce them.

Even today, the tension between faith and revolution persists. But the Cristeros showed: Christ’s Kingship is worth dying for.

The Catholic Church is still standing, Mexico on the other hand? Its has fallen into ruin.

Hoy la Iglesia celebra a San Patricio (ca. 386–461), obispo y misionero conocido como el Apóstol de Irlanda y uno de los santos patronos de esta nación. 🙏💚 🍀

Nació en Britania con el nombre de Maewyn Succat. Cuando era joven, su casa fue atacada por invasores y fue llevado a Irlanda como esclavo. Durante seis años vivió cuidando ovejas en condiciones muy duras. En medio de esa soledad redescubrió su fe y comenzó una profunda conversión espiritual.

Tras lograr escapar y regresar a su tierra, decidió dedicar su vida a Dios. Viajó a las Galias (actual Francia), donde profundizó en su formación cristiana y fue ordenado sacerdote por San Germán de Auxerre. Tiempo después, sintiendo el llamado de Dios, regresó a Irlanda, esta vez como misionero.

Ya como obispo, San Patricio se dedicó a evangelizar la isla, fundar iglesias y monasterios, y fortalecer la fe de los cristianos. Enfrentó tanto al paganismo de los druidas como a errores doctrinales que confundían a los fieles, trabajando incansablemente por la unidad y el crecimiento de la Iglesia.

La tradición cuenta que utilizaba el trébol de tres hojas (shamrock) para explicar el misterio de la Trinidad: Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo, tres personas y un solo Dios verdadero. Con el tiempo, este trébol se convirtió en uno de los símbolos más representativos de Irlanda.

San Patricio también impulsó la formación de sacerdotes locales, ayudando a organizar y consolidar la Iglesia en el país. Su labor influyó incluso en la vida social y cultural de Irlanda, dejando una huella profunda en la historia de la nación.

Antes de morir, escribió su obra autobiográfica “Confesiones”, donde relata su vida, su conversión y su misión evangelizadora.

San Patricio falleció alrededor del año 461 y fue sepultado en Saul, lugar donde había levantado una de las primeras iglesias de la isla. Su legado espiritual sigue vivo hasta hoy y cada 17 de marzo millones de personas en todo el mundo recuerdan su vida, su fe y su misión.
