a quiet nod slipped out as he looked away… he knew things didn’t work like that.
the surprise hit him all over again, because nothing could’ve prepared him for it. it was exactly what had happened to him…

of course he left out the part where the visions hadn’t really stopped — especially because, for some reason, she kept showing up in them…
the weight of the moment settling between them. the almost-smile that tried to surface never quite made it; instead, his gaze stayed fixed on her——sharp enough to catch any wobble in the façade, soft enough not to corner her.
“ really? ”
“and… i don’t even know where to start. long story. messy story.”
he exhaled softly, eyes lifting to hers with a sincerity he finally had access to again.
“how’ve you been?”
“i’m doing alright, actually…”
