The Significance of the Obi in Igbo Culture
The Obi (also called Obu, Iba, Ogbiti, and other names across Igboland) is one of the most sacred institutions in Igbo culture. Traditionally located at the center of a family compound, it belongs to the family patriarch and serves as the primary place for receiving visitors, holding family meetings, entertaining guests, and making important decisions.
Built with open walls for ventilation and a thick thatched roof for shade, the Obi is more than just a structure it symbolizes a man's independence and achievement. Every hardworking Igbo man aspires to establish his own compound with an Obi, reflecting his status as the head of a household.
By tradition, ownership of the Obi is usually inherited by the Diọkpara (first son), who is responsible for preserving it and safeguarding the family's heritage. In communities such as Ọnicha Ado, where it is known as the Iba, it also serves as a sacred place for ancestral consultation and family spiritual rites. The Ụmụada likewise use the Obi for important gatherings and cultural responsibilities.
Although the Obi is customarily passed to the eldest son, an Igbo father has the right to bequeath it to another child if he considers the first son unfit. Because the Obi represents the spiritual and ancestral identity of the family, it is regarded as sacrosanct. Selling the Obi or the land on which it stands is traditionally viewed as a grave dishonor that attracts both public condemnation and, according to Igbo belief, the wrath of the ancestors.
The Obi remains a powerful symbol of identity, continuity, authority, and the enduring values of the Igbo people.
The Ebonyi International Trade Centre, a 10-story high-rise at Presco Junction along Ezza Road in Abakaliki, is the tallest building in Ebonyi State and is being revived after more than 16 years of abandonment.
Originally initiated by former Governor Sam Egwu between 1999 and 2007, the project reached about 70% structural completion before work stopped. Successive administrations left it unfinished amid political disagreements and unverified claims about the building's structural integrity.
Under Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, the project has been revived as part of the People's Charter of Needs agenda. After a comprehensive structural integrity assessment cleared the building for reconstruction, the state approved a redesign and remodeling plan. Construction is now progressing, with the project reported to be about 60% complete.
When completed, the complex will serve as a modern mixed-use commercial hub, housing the Ebonyi Trade Centre and Ebonyi Hotels.
The development is expected to boost commerce, create up to 5,000 jobs, attract investment, and strengthen Ebonyi State's internally generated revenue, positioning it as a major economic and trade destination in Nigeria's South East.
Ala Igbo is under siege‼️
If you weren’t a victim, you would probably be out there defending the APC, standing on a broken mandate.
We have been saying for a long time that we are under siege, yet many of you still think it’s a joke.
Ndi Igbo should wake up and chase these animals out of our land.
Don’t wait for them to start carrying out their dangerous attacks before acting. Act now.
When your fine rich friend gets engaged or married, they say you had this friend since and did not introduce them.

IDENTITY CRISIS
She is either misinformed or lacks historical knowledge. It’s a pity that, at this age, she doesn’t know her own roots. Sadly, there are many like her across the South-South because they have never taken the time to study their history.
Colonial boundaries and political interests divided our people, but they did not erase our roots. If your language, culture, traditions, and ancestry point to a common heritage, don’t let politics define who you are. Study your history, know your origins, and embrace the truth with confidence.
My brother married his girlfriend of 10 years last weekend 🥹they’ve been through so much together even when he had a baby from another person while in the relationship but she still stood by him..this is real love 🥰
