To mark the International Day for People of African Descent, the United Nations Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent and FIDH are convening a global virtual forum under the theme: "Anchoring Reparatory Justice for People of African Descent in International Human Rights Law and Discourse"
The forum offers a space to exchange ideas and approaches on critical issues affecting people of African descent — from the legacies of enslavement and colonisation to ongoing struggles for justice and redress.
⚖️ Reparatory justice is grounded in principles of natural justice. It is the right to remedy for those subjected to harm — including for continued prejudices and injustices resulting from legacies of slavery, colonialism, racism, forcible transfer, torture, and apartheid. Yet efforts to deliver reparatory justice for Africans and people of African descent remain fragmented and fall short of a comprehensive, proportionate response.
🎯 Forum objectives include:
• Examining the role of civil society in promoting reparatory justice
• Exploring how international and regional mechanisms can support this work
• Identifying legal and policy tools for action
• Highlighting emerging opportunities for joint advocacy
📢 Join us as we discuss how reparatory justice can be realised in law, discourse, and action.
