Day 3-4 of my visit to #Serbia: valuable meetings with the Prosecutor General, the EU Ambassador and representatives of academia and civil society. OSCE #SHDMII: Participating States should establish a working group of independent NGOs, experts, and researchers to scrutinise, fact-check, and analyse GONGO’s statements and activities at OSCE events; as well as their operations and government connections.

“The state collects data through institutional power, launders it through pro-govt media, & deploys it as a weapon against those who defend rights. This is not a malfunction of the legal system - it is the legal system being weaponized" @YUCOMoffice’s Jovana Spremo @ SHDMII.
“This is not only a domestic matter. It is a regional security issue - and an OSCE concern,” @PartnersSerbia’s Ana Toskić Cvetinović calls for OSCE Participating States to take action at our SHDMII Side Event “Serbia: Digital threats to civic space.” @bgcentar@HRHBelgrade
“This vacuum of protection is symptomatic of a broader institutional collapse, leaving the citizens with only one avenue for resistance: the protests,” @bgcentar’ Dušan Pokuševski at our OSCE SHDMII Side Event on Serbia.
“Over the past year, @OvdInfo documented 60+ cases in which HRDs secured the release of politically persecuted individuals, mitigated sentences, or obtained access to medical care in detention facilities.” OVD-Info’s Denis Shedov @ our OSCE SHDMII Side Event on Russia.
“These [practices] are, of course, even more pronounced within indigenous, ethnic and religious minority communities.” HRHF’s @delseroad @ our OSCE SHDMII Side Event on Russia.
“@OSCE participating States should respond collectively by protecting exiled civil society, supporting independent Russian and Belarusian media, and recognising digital repression as a security challenge for the entire region.” JX Fund’s Dina Khaskelberg @ our SHDMII Side Event.
▶️ States must stop using surveillance, criminalisation, and digital intimidation to restrict legitimate civic activity
