Labor’s new “digital duty of care” is not just about kids and child sexual abuse material.

The draft laws put the onus on platforms to take down anything posing a “seriously harmful threat to public safety.”

They still won’t properly define that.

Worse, the Communications Minister, Anika Wells, or the eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, acting as her delegate, can add new categories of “harm” by ministerial direction.

No need to amend the Act. Future governments just expand the list.

Parliament gets 15 days to disallow it. That’s the “safeguard.”

Anika Wells says this isn’t censorship. It’s “common sense.” It’s “exactly the kind of things you’d expect.”

That’s the same government that already tried the misinformation bill. That’s the same eSafety regime that has been at war with X.

Angus Taylor called it an attempt to censor social media. Sarah Henderson compared it to the last speech bill Labor had to dump.

Then she wouldn’t say whether the Coalition would support this version if the minister’s add on power was stripped out.

The Greens want that power in. Of course they do.

Protecting children from pornography and grooming is not the argument. Almost no one is arguing against that.

The argument is a minister and a commissioner being handed a live list they can grow later - after the vote, without a new bill.

That’s how speech laws get built.

Treasury told Jim Chalmers before the Budget that his negative gearing and CGT changes would:

- knock house prices lower
- push rents higher
- cut housing supply

That advice just dropped under FOI.

They modelled prices rising about 2% less over two years than they otherwise would.

Rents up 0.25% soon after the policy starts, their own figure was $2 a week on the median rent. Supply lower for a decade.

They even admitted the modelling sits at the low end of other studies and is “subject to significant uncertainty.”

Now prices are falling across most of Sydney and Melbourne. The housing slump is in its fifth month.

Chalmers has already conceded the tax changes are “one of a number of reasons.”

So the official line was “modest.”

The documents say lower prices, higher rents, fewer homes. Renters cop the squeeze. Investors pull back.

Mandarins call for crackdown on 'harmful' social media clips!!!!!

This really takes the cake.

Departmental heads are now complaining about parliamentary footage being played on social media.

The footage is played to expose poor government performance. It’s a critical part of the democratic process that flaws in government process is fully transparent and exposed to the public where possible.

These Department heads are paid almost a million dollars a year courtesy of the taxpayer.

The taxpayer has a right to see how their dollars are spent.

If the mandarins can’t stand the heat they should get out of the kitchen or even better improve their performance.

By all means threats and intimidation are not on, but I am not aware of that occurring. While comments can be coloured unfortunately that is politics. I cop plenty of vitriol all the time. Ideally comments could be more respectful but again you have to learn to take it in this game.

As someone who took the role of holding the bureaucrats to account seriously, this practice should not be stopped.

“Canberras departmental chiefs have demanded politicians be restricted from posting "potentially harmful" video clips of bureaucrats' parliamentary testimony on social media, but insist their request is not aimed at ducking public scrutiny.

The practice of public servants testifying before parliamentary committees has come under growing scrutiny after senior Defence official Celia Perkins appeared before a Senate probe last Friday, protesting what she claimed to be the selective posting of her colleagues' comments.

Arguing the posts were undermining her ability to assure "physical and psychological health and safety" of her staff and had raised “significant security concerns", Ms Perkins' request was quickly dismissed by senators who argued they were within their rights to distribute testimony as they saw fit.”
