Africa continues to suffer losses and damages resulting from climate change impacts. In fact, some experts argue that Africa is increasingly becoming indebted to adapt to climate change vagaries affecting several socio-economic sectors.

In Belem, “Africa will continue calling for full and equitable operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund, with a replenishment framework aligned to the projected economic losses facing vulnerable countries, particularly in Africa. Africa will also continue to demand institutional coherence between the Fund, the Santiago Network, and the Warsaw International Mechanism which are all geared towards addressing loss and damage resulting from climate change,” said Dr. Muyungi. Africa’s energy poverty and its desire for sustainable development remain an aspiration worth pursuing. In the context of the Just Transition, Africa has continued to underscore the importance of not just highlighting decarbonization, but emphasise justice, energy access, jobs and sustainable development.
