BREAKING NEWS: Vitalik states that @Pumpfun has killed memecoins by turning new retail investors entering the crypto space into degenerate gamblers.

He also stated that @pumpfun has been a net negative to #crypto and #memecoins since it’s advent in 2024 by draining the $crypto ecosystem and turning first time retail #crypto enthusiasts into gamblers not investors.

He notably said during the interview that #memecoins we’re better pre @pumpfun since we had SHIB, DOGE, PEPE, WIF, BONK etc the list goes on but since @pumpfun has taken a stranglehold on the #memecoin economy all we now see are 100k toppers on our timelines.

Vitalik was visibly shaken and moved during the interview and he almost shed a tear 😢

Vitaliks concluding remark was that the @pumpfun platform is setup like a casino slot machine you keep clicking until your fully drained, and pump fun ultimately wins but retail loses the most.

Yes the extraction is structural & it is the main reason the market keeps failing to produce durable billion dollar runners.

Pumpfun (& the KOL/streamer layer that thrives on it) turns every launch into a high velocity value extraction machine. Capital is siphoned at the micro level through fees, creator dumps, coordinated promotions & early curve exits long before a token can accumulate the sustained liquidity, attention & belief required for a real run. The result is a casino that recycles the same money through endless dying microcaps instead of letting it compound.

How the money is extracted before anything can run:

• Platform and creator fees are paid on every trade while the token is still tiny. Bonding-curve trades take 1.25% (0.95% to the protocol, 0.30% to the creator). That scales with volume. A token that does meaningful curve volume has already paid substantial fees before it even graduates (roughly ~85 SOL of real net buys, around the mid-five-figure market-cap zone depending on SOL price). After graduation, fees continue on PumpSwap. Lifetime platform fees are in the ~$1.3B range with protocol revenue ~$1.17B. That money leaves the token economies.

• Graduation is not success. Roughly 1 in 58 tokens graduate. The majority of those still die quickly. Survival data shows only a small single digit percentage of graduates still trading near or above their graduation market cap after 24 hours or 7 days. Most never even trade past launch day.

• Early participants & KOLs exit into later buyers. The curve itself rewards early buys & punishes late ones. Creators & insiders frequently take positions early (or via bundles) then promote. KOLs & streamers amplify this: they are incentivized to call, farm fees/attention & exit. Studies & onchain patterns show heavy wash trading, coordinated activity, & sophisticated extraction; the majority of retail ends net negative.

• Bots & infrastructure amplify the drain. Sandwich attacks & automated strategies are concentrated on the platform. High failure rates (vast majority of tokens down 90%+ from peaks) mean the money that enters is mostly redistributed to platforms, creators, early wallets & skilled extractors rather than held in the tokens themselves.
The numbers show the outcome: millions of launches, platform revenue that stays high even while the broader memecoin market contracts & very few tokens that hold meaningful size for long.

The current setup normalizes the rinse. It keeps the overall market in a high churn, low trust state where retail is repeatedly the exit liquidity. Reducing that extraction layer is not anti crypto tbh it is the condition required for the next set of real runners to exist at scale. Capital that is no longer systematically siphoned early can actually accumulate & push tokens further. The people who stop feeding the extraction machine & position for the higher quality or more organic opportunities that emerge once the pure casino incentives weaken are the ones positioned for the larger moves.
