School children are not political props.
I have today written to the concerned authorities in the Government of Madhya Pradesh seeking an inquiry and action against the use of school children for politically organised programmes.
I am also making complaints to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and the Madhya Pradesh Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
This is not about one isolated event. What we are seeing across Madhya Pradesh raises serious questions.
CBSE issued a circular encouraging schools to celebrate the Tiranga and organise activities around Independence Day, including Tiranga rallies.
But in Obedullaganj, Raisen, what should have been a patriotic activity appears to have been turned into a political event.
On 14 August, school children were reportedly made to miss school to participate in a Tiranga Yatra. BJP MLA Surendra Patwa’s own post describes the Yatra as having been organised at the Mandal level. The publicity material carries the BJP symbol and political leaders are seen leading the procession.
Separately, in Singrauli, the consequences of mobilising school children for such yatras became even more disturbing.
More than 200 students from eight schools participated in a Tiranga Yatra. Students reportedly walked several kilometres, some nearly 6 km and were made to wait in the heat. Twelve students fell ill and had to be taken for medical treatment. [https://t.co/tP6ditbVFG]
These are two separate incidents. But together they raise a larger question:
Why are school children being taken out of classrooms and mobilised for these events across Madhya Pradesh?
There is a fundamental difference between children celebrating the nation and political leaders using school children and government machinery to stage public events around the Tiranga.
We already celebrate Independence Day in our schools on 15 August.
What choice does a government school child really have?
Can the child say no?
Were the parents asked?
Can a government school refuse when those in political power expect its students to participate?
Patriotism cannot become a pretext for political mobilisation of children.
I have sought an inquiry, accountability of the officials and political functionaries responsible wherever violations are established, and clear State-wide rules prohibiting the use of school children and school machinery for partisan political programmes.
And that rule must apply to every political party.
At a time when India urgently needs education reform, we can begin here:
Let children learn about the nation.
Don’t use them for politics.
