A health facility is more than a building. It is often where hope begins—or where it is lost.
During my recent visit to the rural municipality of Salamabila, in Kabambare Territory, Maniema Province, I met dedicated health workers who continue to serve their communities despite overwhelming challenges.
One conversation has stayed with me.
The medical officer explained that families are increasingly forced to choose between seeking healthcare and meeting their daily needs. Medicine shortages have become frequent. Care that was once free or heavily subsidized now often requires user fees that many simply cannot afford. Too often, children under five and pregnant women arrive too late.
These challenges go far beyond healthcare alone. Measles cases are reappearing. Polio has returned. Only around 38% of the population has access to safe drinking water, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases and malnutrition. Although the area is relatively stable, survivors of sexual violence also struggle to access the support they need.
What struck me most was not only the scale of the needs, but the determination of the health workers who continue to show up every day with very limited resources and no humanitarian partners currently supporting the health zone.
Their commitment deserves more than admiration—it deserves action.
No community should be left behind simply because it is remote. By strengthening local health services, improving access to clean water, supporting disease prevention, and investing in community resilience, we can help ensure that families in Salamabila have the opportunity not just to survive, but to thrive.
Sometimes the most important thing we can do is listen. And then act.

📍 Mwenga, South Kivu, DRC
Crises do not start when displacement happens.
They begin long before through rising tensions, disrupted livelihoods, limited access to services, and increasing vulnerability within communities.
That is why anticipatory action matters.
Through this locally-led initiative in Mwenga, Humanitarian Action for Africa (HAA), with the support of the Start Network, is working alongside communities to prepare before crisis strikes strengthening early warning, community engagement, preparedness, and rapid humanitarian readiness.
In fragile and conflict-affected contexts like eastern DRC, investing in anticipation is not only more effective it is more dignified, more humane, and more sustainable.
Local actors are not only responders.
They are the first line of preparedness, trust, and resilience.
Proud to see locally-led humanitarian action advancing in South Kivu through collaboration, community leadership, and anticipatory approaches that place people at the center of response.

Humanitarian Action for Africa (HAA) is proud to have participated in the General Assembly of the Start Network RDC Hub, a key moment of exchange and reflection on strengthening locally led humanitarian action in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
We especially congratulate our Country Director, @Djoko_Casimir , for presenting his candidacy for the position of Chair of the Board, reflecting a strong commitment to collaborative leadership, accountability, localization, and inclusive humanitarian governance.
HAA remains committed to contributing to a stronger, more coordinated, and more transformative humanitarian ecosystem led by national and local actors.
Participating in the General Assembly of the @hub_rdc was a meaningful moment of engagement, learning, and collective reflection on the future of locally led humanitarian action.
I had the honor of presenting my candidacy for the position of Chair of the Board, with the conviction that humanitarian leadership must become more collaborative, more locally driven, more human-centered, and focused on sustainable solutions for crisis-affected communities.
Beyond a candidacy, this experience was above all an opportunity to share a vision: a strong, credible, and inclusive hub that amplifies the voice of national organizations, promotes innovation and anticipation in humanitarian response, and strengthens governance built on trust, transparency, and solidarity.
I remain deeply grateful for the discussions, encouragement, and spirit of collaboration that shaped this General Assembly. Together, let us continue building a more locally led, equitable, and transformative humanitarian response in the DRC.@StartNetwork@sidunitedstates@AA_stabilisiert@USEmbKinshasa@MidefehopsAsbl@upddhe80066@Humanitarian_AA@globalnetworkdr@million_lives@iki_germany@GCAdaptation@GlobalPubInvt

Mon engagement, à travers Humanitarian Action for Africa (HAA), est clair :

The latest report by highlights a deeply alarming situation in eastern DRC:
➡️ 1.23 million internally displaced people
➡️ 3.9 million people facing acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3+)
➡️ Ongoing violence across Masisi, Rutshuru, Beni, Lubero, and Walikale
Behind these numbers are families forced to flee multiple times, children cut off from essential services, and communities living under constant threat.
⚠️ Overcrowded and fragile living conditions are increasing the risk of disease outbreaks such as cholera, while insecurity continues to restrict humanitarian access.
💡 Although humanitarian actors are delivering life-saving assistance (food, health, nutrition, protection), needs continue to outpace the response.
👉 Now more than ever, we must:
•Strengthen humanitarian coordination
•Increase flexible and timely funding
•Support local actors and frontline responders
•Invest in integrated resilience approaches
🤝 Acting now is critical to prevent further deterioration and to protect lives and dignity.

Kinshasa faces recurrent flooding year after year with the return of the rains.
As we enter the rainy season, the risk of increased impact on communities remains a serious concern.
Today, in Limete particularly in Ndanu and Salongo neighborhoods households are once again affected.
This situation highlights the importance of strengthening early warning systems, community preparedness, resilient urban approaches, and the capacities of local actors.
Acting early means protecting lives and preserving dignity.
