ANSWER
This individual had childhood rickets.
Rickets is caused by vitamin D deficiency, which leads to a softening and bending of bones. It was common in the 1700s - poverty and overcrowded cities contributed to child malnutrition and a lack of sunlight (needed to make vit D)

#OTD 1718 William Hunter was born.
Hunter’s family intended him to have a career in the church until the uncertain teenage William, encouraged by a Dr Cullen, decided instead to work in medicine. He went on to become a leading anatomy teacher who also specialised in midwifery.
