A biweekly history podcast covering lesser-known civilizations, particularly in Africa, Asia and the Americas. Season 4: the Haudenosaunee launching soon!
Welcome! History Unwritten is a narrative history podcast covering the "History of the Rest of the World", mainly focused on civilizations from Asia, Africa and the Americas who deserve more attention than they get. Find us wherever you get your podcasts!
I am pleased to report that I have begun writing Episode 4.1! I’d estimate I’m about 1/3 of the way through the script so far.
Still want to get the season written before launching, so it’s still too soon to wager a guess on a launch date. But the end is in sight!
If you live in the USA, you've likely seen this symbol before in wrought iron and never thought twice about it? Did you know that the symbol comes from West Africa?
African blacksmiths, both free and enslaved, were renowned for their skill, particularly in New Orleans...
@domyindee In fairness to Ayutthaya, the royal chronicles do give us a date for U Thong, and to my understanding the scholarly consensus is to trust that timeline (roughly at least). I’m not trawling the records in their original languages, so I personally defer to the scholars myself.
@domyindee I haven’t personally read the Chinese chronicles, only seen them referenced in secondary sources. As to the 18th century descriptors, those are the ones I know of personally and see cited often but if that’s all of them I can’t say for sure.
It’s finally here! Just about hmm, 4-5 months late….
Unfortunately I can’t promise a timeline for the launch of Season 4. My best guesses are either too conservative or too cynical, so we’ll have to wait and find out together.
But worry not! Season 4 is coming, so stay tuned!
Season 3 Interlude - The Tale of Khun Chang and Khun Phaen
In our inter-season interlude, we recount the Thai epic, The Tale of Khun Chang and Khun Phaen, and assess its meanings for gender roles and social hierarchies in Ayutthayan society.

So this estimate was way off, but good news! The interlude episode is finally written in it’s entirety. Still need to edit the script and record, but we’re in the final stretch.
ETA some time in the next few weeks!
Hi folks, it's been a while so I wanted to give a quick update: Season 4 is progressing, but slowly. I've been on the job hunt, which consumes a lot of my time. Right now I'm finishing the outline stage and hope to have a seasonal interlude out shortly after that.
Season 4 is continuing apace but I honestly can’t say for sure when to expect it. I started a new job last month (finally!) so I’m still getting used to the new schedule. I’ll let you folks know when I know, though.

This great story from CambodiaPOLS delves into the background of the Emerald Buddha statue, it’s importance to Thailand & the shared traditions it holds with neighboring countries that have influenced its journey through the centuries. #Twitterstorians

It’s just a short anecdote, but can’t say I’m familiar with the claim that U Thong banned opium. I just checked and it’s not in the royal chronicles either - no clue where the idea might be sourced from given the article doesn’t cite anything for it.
In 1360 the Thai king Ramathibodi I banned the sale and consumption of opium, which merchants had introduced in the previous century.
Society’s battle against what Richard Nixon called ‘public enemy number one’ is an ancient one:

@danthenix I’m no expert on historical restoration, but I have to assume the ruins are in such poor condition that a restored structure would almost certainly be almost entirely new. Perhaps that’s part of it, perhaps the cultural authority of Thailand prefers the ruins, who knows!
Protective or power-giving #tattoos or #sakyant were popular in traditional Southeast Asia. A 19th-century Thai folding book depicts a man from #Lanna (Northern Thailand) with thighs tattooed black, and another with red tattoos featuring #yantra designs https://t.co/sMTeZQJ7NO
