This man has a point and I somehow see it. However, he is unable to create a dichotomy between positioning for global relevance and the need to retain one’s identity.

With his tweet, he has elevated some languages over others because of the global “opportunities” those languages present. But that is not the essence of a language; the opportunities they present are secondary.

Languages existed long before there was a global economy. People did not come together to create Igbo, Yoruba, French or English to increase their opportunities; they simply emerged as the natural languages of communities. So they became repositories of culture and belonging.

The “open doors” point you made is a modern consequence of economics and geopolitics. The languages you prioritize are valuable internationally not because they are inherently superior, but because of historical factors. If history had unfolded differently, another language might occupy that role.

The point is that a language’s most significant role is to connect people within a community and preserve its identity. Its value as a path to global opportunities is quite secondary.
