In Osaka, a highway goes through a building.
Not next to it.
Not under it.
Through it.
The road uses the 5th, 6th, and 7th floors of Gate Tower Building.
The elevators do not stop there.
The office workers do not work there.
Cars just rush straight through the middle of the structure.
I stared at the photo for a while.
Some countries solve problems by picking one thing and destroying the other.
Japan looked at a building and a highway and somehow said,
all right, both of you stay.
That feels very Japanese to me.
Order, compromise, and a quiet refusal to waste either the past or the future.
