Wufeng (river gunboat) has the yarrow hidden propeller system for shallow water gunboats. I’ve only seen side views of the system but the Taiwanese archives had Italian gunboat plans that had a plan of the system. So I’m guessing it looked like this from the bottom.

So the sichuan navy had 3 large gunboats and 2 small gunboats. The US intel report describes the armament for the one of the 2 new large gunboats but not sure for which gunboat. Seems French intel might have more info.

Supposedly image of Zaschitnik (Ding Hai) during Russian volunteer fleet service in Vladivostok. She was modified at a Japanese shipyard at Dalian for naval service in Chang Tso Lin’s navy.

Finished Central plains wars and now starting anti communist campaigns and Manchuria invasion by Japan. Sadly no info on the new 1931 northeast navy gunboats but there was a mention of the 2 new Szechuan navy gunboats. ~200 tons and 140 ft gunboats are apparently small lol.

U.S. Military Intelligence Reports, China 1911-1942 are a pretty good glimpse into China during those times. Been reading 1929 onwards for any info on gunboat actions but info on battles mainly focus on the army and airforce. Lots of interesting stuff.

It more than likely is Zashchitnik. Tsar Schichou Nicou is the transliteration of the name in Chinese. She was also headed to Dalian in December 1924.

Finding the former identity of Ding Hai is such a doozy. It’s either the White Russian “Zashchitnik“, “Tsar Schichou Nicou???” -which I don’t really think so, or “Patrocles“. According to northeast navy records it’s length (possibly at waterline) is 186 ft, width is 31 ft 10 in

I wonder if the Andong water police obtained any gunboats when it was under nationalist control after the war. It was pretty brief but they did reach the Yalu River. The water police during Japanese occupation mainly had fanboats. Pic of the China North Korea bridge ROC era.

ROCN Japanese No1 class minesweeper. Not sure which this one is. Either 201, 202, or 203. 201 defected to the communists but this was taken before then I think.

Pics of ROCS Haining (海寧) formerly a Japanese boat named (若丸). Possibly a requisitioned ship but origins are unknown. Probably near Qingdao or Yingkou areas 1948. Served with the ROCN until the late 1950’s.
