Three young children, ages 3 to 5, started to drown underneath a capsized boat as their parents screamed for help.

The boat had flipped with nine people on board, and while the others made it out, the three smallest children were still trapped underneath. Their parents couldn’t reach them, and every second they remained under the water mattered.

Nearby, Jason Horne heard their screams. He told his 12 year old daughter to call 911, jumped into the water and dove underneath the overturned boat.

He found the first child and pulled him out conscious and coughing. Then Jason went back underneath and found a 5 year old girl who wasn’t breathing. He got her onto the overturned boat and immediately started CPR until she finally gasped and opened her eyes.

But there was still another child trapped underneath.

Jason dove back in. The third child, a 3 year old boy, was eventually pulled free tangled in rope and without a pulse. Jason immediately began CPR for a second time as they rushed toward shore, and before they reached the dock, the little boy started breathing.

All three children survived.

Jason went under that boat again and again until every one of those kids was breathing. I think a dad like that deserves a little recognition today.

Una lección de vida:

Trajimos a Akon a casa porque la gente del refugio creía que no le quedaba mucho tiempo.
Era mayor, débil y sufría artritis. Años de lesiones le habían dificultado caminar, y cada vez que intentaba correr, a menudo perdía el equilibrio y caía.
Sabíamos que nadie se apresuraba a adoptarlo.
Así que decidimos darle un hogar donde pudiera pasar en paz el tiempo que le quedaba.
Pero solo una semana después, Akon cambió nuestras vidas para siempre.
Eran alrededor de las 2 de la madrugada cuando de repente le oímos arañar desesperadamente la puerta.
Al principio, no entendíamos qué pasaba.
Cuando me levanté para comprobar cómo estaba, Akon corrió hacia la puerta trasera. Le seguimos fuera.
Fue entonces cuando nos dimos cuenta de que algo iba muy mal.
Había una fuga de gas en la casa.
Todos estaban dormidos. Si Akon no nos hubiera despertado y nos hubiera sacado fuera, las consecuencias podrían haber sido devastadoras.
Llamamos inmediatamente a un técnico para que inspeccionara la situación. Tras comprobar la fuga, nos dijo que si hubiéramos permanecido dentro varias horas más, la situación podría haberse vuelto crítica.
Después de eso, vimos a Akon de forma diferente.
El viejo perro que apenas podía andar.
El perro que luchaba por correr sin caerse.
El perro que nadie más quería.
El perro que trajimos a casa porque pensábamos que le estábamos dando un final pacífico...
Al final nos salvó a todos.

Staff Sergeant Daniel Hertz died in a training accident in Germany in February. He was 34.

His father, Frank, flew to Dover to bring him home, and on the flight back to Omaha he realized nobody had asked about the dog.

Kaiser is a 6-year-old German shepherd. Daniel bought him as a puppy from a breeder outside Stuttgart during his first posting and kept him through two more. When Daniel died, the dog was at his apartment near the base with a neighbor feeding him.

Frank is 79 and a retired high school shop teacher. He'd met Kaiser twice, on video calls.

Flying a large dog from Germany to Nebraska took weeks. Kaiser needed a vet exam, a rabies certificate, an entry form for the CDC and a crate big enough for a 90-pound shepherd. Only one airline would fly a dog that size that time of year, and the next open cargo slot was five weeks out.

In Germany, Daniel's platoon sergeant, Mike Bauer, drove Kaiser to his own house, kept him for five weeks and sent Frank a video every night of the dog lying by the door.

Frank had never used email much. His granddaughter set him up with an account, and he spent most of March on the phone with a pet shipping company and the cargo office at the Chicago airport, writing everything on a yellow legal pad.
The bill came to about $4,700. Frank paid it out of Daniel's life insurance, and he said that was what Daniel would have wanted.

Kaiser landed in Chicago on a Wednesday in April. Frank and his wife drove the 470 miles the day before and slept at a motel by the airport. At the cargo warehouse a handler wheeled the big plastic crate out on a dolly and set it down on the concrete floor.

Frank knelt down in front of it and opened the door.
Kaiser came out slowly. He walked around Frank once, sniffing his hands and his jacket, the way a dog checks a stranger. Kaiser stopped, pushed his nose hard into Frank's neck and stood there, breathing him in.
Frank's wife says he sounds just like Daniel when he talks.

Kaiser sleeps in Daniel's old bedroom now, on the floor next to the bed. Every night Frank goes in and sits on the edge of the bed for a while before he turns out the light.
