I am still saying it, and this is coming from someone who finds physics fascinating: medicine is way beyond anything engineering will ever accomplish.

An aircraft is a mighty feat. We designed it. A space rocket? We designed it. Electromagnetic technology, bridges, computers, all of these are incredible feats, but ultimately things we designed and built from the ground up.

Now think about medicine. Humans are opening up a body they did not design, navigating structures they did not create, knowing what to cut, what not to touch, what connects to what, where something needs to go and what carries it there and then putting the whole thing back together.

That is, and will probably forever remain, mightier to me than anything we have ever achieved as engineers.

The problem with this kind of behaviour is that the consequences eventually affect people who don’t have the same earning power.

When you constantly pay more than something is worth just because you can afford it, you may think you’re helping. But over time, you can unintentionally create a situation where sellers lose touch with reality. They begin to believe that everyone should be willing and able to pay those same prices.

Yahoo boys have contributed to this in many areas of Nigeria. From clothes to clubbing and several other lifestyle expenses, they had the money and were willing to spend without thinking twice. Sellers noticed this and adjusted their prices accordingly. The problem is that the average person doesn’t have that kind of spending power, yet they’re now expected to pay prices that don’t necessarily reflect the actual value of what they’re buying.

The same thing has happened with roadside area boys. People kept giving them money because they could afford to, me included, but unfortunately, what started as generosity became an entitlement. Some now act as if you owe them money, and refusing to give can even lead to harassment.

I experienced something that made this very clear to me during the Crypto With Shola Meet & Greet in April, 2025.

One of the guys who was serving food in the restaurant for us asked me for money. I didn’t even have much naira with me at the time, but I gave him ₦1,000.

The guy came back and returned the money. I was so pissed.

Another one happened in Eko hotel. I wanted to park my car and the lady who abandoned me while I was trying to park moved funny. I even had a scratch to the wall because where she directed me to go park was so tight. When I was leaving, she didn’t ask me for money, she was just coming to close to me, waiting, and I got the message.

I just gave her N500, she gave me back the money telling me that she’s not begging me, that what will she do with N500? And even threatened that the next time she sees me, she wouldn’t even bother helping me park.

I just took my money back and drove off.

These are people that get paid for the service they render by the companies that put them there, but because we’ve normalized being nice to them just because we can afford to, entitlement has entered.

It’s okay to pay the amount what you’re getting is worth. It’s okay to try bargain if you feel it’s being too pricy. As long as you’re not cheating them, as long as you’re paying what it is worth, that’s fine.
