If you have been working for at least two years and your work shows leadership, impact, and a clear sense of direction, applying for the Chevening Scholarship might be one of the best decisions you will ever make.

I still remember how it started for me. Right after my final exams at the university, I was eager to return to the classroom for a master’s. I had dreams of becoming a lecturer, joining ASUU, and leading strikes (maybe it was the lingering energy of student union days and all the “greatest gba gba” moments).

I used my first NYSC allowance to buy a UI master’s form. Sat for the entrance exam. I was getting ready for the departmental interview when I casually mentioned it to my then-supervisor.

He looked at me and said, “You want to resign and go for your master’s?”
I said yes.
He said, “Calm down.”

He told me to take my time. That I didn’t need to pay for a master’s or study in Nigeria. He said with the work I was already doing, I could qualify for a global opportunity and that I should give myself two more years to grow, gain clarity, and decide what path to follow.

That conversation made me pause. I withdrew from the UI master’s process and focused on doing meaningful work. Around the same time, I discovered the Chevening Scholarship — a UK government programme for professionals with two or more years of experience. Fully funded. Focused on leadership. Built for people like me.

From that point, I became intentional. I kept a record of everything I was doing; from SDG advocacy to tracking constituency projects to tackling misinformation. I paid attention to growth. By January 2019, I had crossed the two-year mark and was ready to apply. I attended a masterclass, started writing my essays in March 2019, and submitted my application in October.

In 2020, I got it. And it changed everything.

Since then, Chevening has opened doors I didn’t even know existed. I have met other scholars in countries I never imagined visiting — in airports, government offices, and high-level events. The network is real.

And the interesting part is that the essays are more than just part of the application. They became a kind of vision board. My fourth essay on career plans still feels prophetic. Six years later, I am doing almost everything I said I would do.

At 12pm today, the 2025 application portal opens. It covers full tuition, return flights, monthly stipends, and a seat at the table with people shaping the future across the world. It is worth over $80,000. But more than that, it’s a chance to reset your trajectory.
