I was a poetry minor in college before I dropped out the first time and these are my thoughts on lyricism, i am her so I figured I might as well. For those who care :

A 2 word phrase that is a triple entendre and a 3 min long song containing 3 metaphors , 3 similes, and a surprise twist ending…walk into a bar…

Both the 2 word phrase and 3min long song makes the bartender cry and think about his childhood and hope for tomorrow and like he can takeover the world and beat a bitch ass n alldat.. both do this equally….

Objectively , to create that same feeling with 2 words takes more cognitive skill. so what does that say? True, There are literary devices that are “more complex”. That 2 word triple entendre? In order to convey the same feelings of a 3 min long song.. in 2 words you have: to tell a story, imply similes, use the same processing used for metaphors at scale and condense the 3 act structure into a picture in another persons mind , which now requires cultural competency

But if something is harder to do, is that better? A surgeon can operate repeatedly on the spine and after 2 surgeries requiring only 6 weeks physical therapy gets that patient pain free, where no surgery and just a physical therapist might required 10 consistent months…. The surgeon is more concise… is she better? The patient never has any adverse side effects meets his wife at the facility 2 months into training with the physical therapist, is she better?

No wrong answers but here’s mine: hip hop started out in the park, now everybody trying to… 🫶🏾. The concept of “better” and lyricism in the same sentence is nonsensical… though I love Lupe and have been greatly effected by his music in speaking to the topic-lyrics from the root word lyre an ancient African stringed instrument adopted by the Greeks …. Since this “adoption” philosophies like unbuntu where I get the first half of my name from “iAM because WE ARE” , these philosophies are ignored for the adopted dogma of hierarchy. My issue with hierarchy is not only bc of the authority thing … or even the subjectification … but mainly its nonsense. Imposed Hierarchy is ineffective at efficiency at its core.

It reorients efficiency for those with authority instead of by those experiencing the effects of that authority.

It’s devoid of context or merit in relation to the present moment , that’s what the ancient Greeks had, ppl that were better than other ppl regardless of context or outcome. Is that the best king? Who cares, he is the king .

Hip hop started in the PARK , not in the classroom.. by those standards which ever brings the people together some can say is the “best”….

So the 2 word phrase that gripped you or the 3 min long song you got to savor? Well, are you tryna be gripped or savored dawg? Pause no hetero… see that truth is…

there is no true answer because objective hierarchies were created to distract the people and hoard power. But that’s not fun, so if a 2 word triple entrendre and a 3 min long song walk into your bar , just be grateful they stopped by. That’s what I learned as a warrior poet. Toast to the samurais 🌻
