In 2018, Rubin Swift traveled from Cleveland to Phoenix to take custody of his newborn daughter, Ru-Andria.

When it was time to go home, he arrived at the airport with his four-day-old baby and learned they couldn't board. Frontier Airlines required newborns to be at least seven days old to fly.

Rubin suddenly had three days to wait in an unfamiliar city. He didn't have enough money for a hotel or rental car, and he had a newborn to care for.

There was one person he thought to call.

Joy Ringhofer was a 78-year-old hospital volunteer Rubin had met only days earlier while visiting his daughter at the hospital.

When Rubin explained what had happened, Joy didn't simply offer advice.

She came to get them.

Joy brought Rubin and Ru-Andria into her home, fed them, gave them somewhere to sleep and helped care for the baby. Rubin later recalled that she would even stay awake with Ru-Andria during the night.

For three days, two people who had recently been strangers lived under the same roof while waiting for the little girl to become old enough to fly.

Once Ru-Andria reached seven days old, Frontier rebooked their flight and waived the change fees. Rubin and his daughter finally returned home to Cleveland.

But they left Phoenix with something neither had expected.

Rubin had started calling the woman who opened her door to them "Grandma Joy."

He later described her simply as "the grandmother to my child."

A mother and her three daughters endured severe housing conditions from 2023 until February 2026 after repeated pipe breaks, flooding, and unchecked mold growth.

Despite multiple maintenance requests no effective help arrived. Requests to relocate were met with retaliation.

Experts later confirmed toxic mold levels so extreme they would only enter the home in full hazmat gear. Water bills soared between $1,000 and nearly $4,000 due to ongoing leaks. The family lost essentially everything to contamination and left with only their clothes.

The mother works full-time while attending school full-time; her daughters are honor-roll students. After rebuilding their lives post-divorce, they are now forced to start over from scratch. She is publicly advocating for justice, refuses to be silenced, and encourages others to speak up for themselves and their families.
