O'Connell often included antislavery rhetoric and appeals to Irish Americans in repeal speeches, including monster rallies like this, meaning that the American slavery debate reached many prospective emigrants before they left Ireland.

1/ On this day in 1843, a Catholic holiday, Daniel O'Connell held a monster meeting for repeal of the union between Britain and Ireland at the Hill of Tara, seat of the ancient high kings of Ireland. In a letter to the Times, 19 Aug., repealers claimed one million attended.
