@Enthusiast0P@rtenews The government are the majority shareholder in ESB at 97.7%. The retail arm of ESB, Electric Ireland, have a market share of around 40%. What we need is our government, majority shareholder, to agree to make less money !!
@EoinLenihan Imagine a world where a TD was ineligible for reelection if their department missed targets or budgets during a term. Might see some accountability then
@AontuIE No individual TD has ever lost a no confidence vote in the dail. This is a completely pointless action. Even if she comes before the dail how many minutes will be spent discussing it? 5 maybe 6. There has to be a better way to get answers for the public
@AontuIE Pretty abysmal. I’d love the country to see real change but I’m also a realist. Even if we changed government tomorrow, a lot of the items on the list will take years to solve. There is no quick fix for some of the major items here. Could take up to 10 years
@JimJusterson@paulmurphy_TD Less to benefit from? The argument is hitting the nail square on the head. The root cause of this strike is all sectors need more to get by as we are pillaged with far too many taxes on pretty much everything. Reduce the daily costs and you increase people’s disposable income.
@paulmurphy_TD Same workers that threw new entrants under the bus in 2011, 2013 and 2015 to preserve their own salaries and pensions while the country was on its knees?
@Therightschtuff@paulmurphy_TD Exactly. For all sectors. How about reducing VAT from 23% to the EU mandated 15%? Fixed price on excise duty rather than % based? Remove levies on car insurance? Reduce motor tax…or tolls. There are far better ways to tackle the need to make people’s money go further
@paulmurphy_TD Said it before. It doesn’t matter if your private or public sector but chasing inflation with salary increases is not tackling the root cause of the problem which everyone with a head can see is the cost of living. You put more in peoples pockets by reducing their daily costs.
@ciarannugent Private sector pay increases would be based on individual and company performance factors. Public sector pay is typically based on years served regardless of either metrics. Would private sector employers be increasing salaries if they were losing millions and missing targets?
@capN_cook_93@paulmurphy_TD Absolutely. This is an attempt to chase inflation which we will never win. You reduce people’s daily costs to make their current income go further.
@paulmurphy_TD You are chasing the wrong thing. We are increasing the minimum wage to chase inflation. You reduce costs, VAT, personal taxes, excise etc. That’s what puts money back in peoples pockets especially those on minimum wage.
@paulmurphy_TD I understand the climate argument but even with the best will in the world, how can we make any inroads on the problem when the world’s largest polluters such as China, India and the US undo any investment we make in minutes.
@AontuL Valid questions but you know well that no minister will ever bring specifics to the dail chamber. They only know broad department policies, not the fine detail. If you want answers, you need to be probing the senior civil servants who actually run these departments day in day out
