Antisemitic hate crimes surged across New York City last month, with Jews continuing to face more hate crimes than any other group, according to newly released NYPD data.

Police recorded 41 antisemitic hate crimes in May, accounting for roughly 60% of all hate crimes reported citywide during the month. The figure represents a significant increase compared to recent months and averages out to approximately one antisemitic incident every 18 hours.

Despite making up only about 10% of New York City’s population, Jews continue to be targeted in more hate crimes than all other groups combined, highlighting growing concerns within the Jewish community.

The rise comes amid a broader increase in antisemitic incidents across the United States. National organizations tracking antisemitism have reported record levels of anti-Jewish incidents in recent years, while surveys have shown an increase in antisemitic attitudes and stereotypes.

Separately, an NYU student was arrested last month after allegedly raising a swastika flag over a university building. The student was charged with aggravated harassment and making a terroristic threat. University officials strongly condemned the incident.

New York leaders have repeatedly pledged to combat antisemitism and strengthen security for Jewish communities. Last month, Governor Kathy Hochul announced $25 million in funding to help organizations facing hate-related threats and attacks.

The latest figures serve as a reminder of the challenges still facing Jewish communities across New York and the continued need for vigilance, education and strong law enforcement against hate crimes.
