As the Director of the Srebrenica Memorial, my life's work is centered around ensuring the world never forgets the atrocities that occurred on July 11, 1995. This date marks a dark chapter in human history—the genocide in Srebrenica, where over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were systematically killed in an act of unspeakable brutality.
I am writing to advocate for the adoption of a United Nations General Assembly resolution designating July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance of Genocide in Srebrenica. This initiative is not just about honoring the memory of those we lost; it is about safeguarding our future by learning from the past.
Firstly, establishing July 11 as an official day of remembrance sends a powerful message of solidarity and support to survivors and victims' families. For those of us who endured the horrors of Srebrenica, this day holds immense significance—it is a time to mourn, to reflect, and to draw strength from our shared experiences. Recognizing this day on an international level acknowledges the pain and suffering that transcends borders and cultures.
Secondly, a designated day of remembrance fosters global awareness and education about the dangers of hatred and intolerance. Genocide does not occur in isolation; it festers in environments of prejudice and division. By commemorating Srebrenica annually, we reinforce the importance of promoting tolerance, inclusion, and understanding in our societies. Through education and remembrance, we can work towards preventing future atrocities.
Moreover, an International Day of Remembrance of Genocide in Srebrenica serves as a solemn reminder of the international community's responsibility to prevent and respond to genocide wherever it may occur. The events in Srebrenica were a failure of humanity—a failure to protect innocent lives in the face of evil. By formally recognizing this day, we commit ourselves to upholding the principles of human rights and justice for all.
Finally, designating July 11 as an international day of remembrance honors the resilience and courage of survivors. It acknowledges their struggle for justice and healing. It tells survivors that their voices matter and that their experiences will not be forgotten.

Artist here with some thoughts on the amazing JWST images. There’s a lot going on in these images that prompt us non-astronomers to be affected by them in ways that are both particular and powerful.
