The African Democratic Congress, ADC, led by its 2027 Presidential Candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has announced a major Electoral Reform that will allow qualified Nigerians to contest in elections, without belonging to any political party.

This is contained in the ADC’s 2027 Policy Document under “Electoral Reform”, and has been welcomed by Traders, Students, Teachers and first-time Aspirants nationwide, who say that it will remove the bottlenecks that have kept ordinary citizens out of politics for decades, due to the very unaffordable costs placed by the existing political parties.

For decades, the only way to contest in elections in Nigeria, is through a political party. That meant paying for expensive nomination forms, seeking approval from Party Leaders, and surviving primary elections often decided by excessive cash and political godfathers. Many competent Nigerians even with Community support, have been shut out, simply because they could not afford the process.

Under the 2027 Atiku Presidency, that requirement will end. According to the Policy Document: “We will allow qualified Nigerians to run for Public Office, without belonging to a Political Party, while putting in place safeguards to ensure credibility, seriousness and a level playing field.”

To ensure that only serious people contest, the Atiku Presidency proposes “a non-refundable deposit requirement, comparable to what party-sponsored Candidates pay, to ensure only serious Candidates contest”. The Document also states that strict measures will be put in place to ensure that “Independent Candidates meet all existing Constitutional and Legal qualifications for the Office they seek”.

To protect the system from abuse, the Policy Document states that it will “establish clear verification processes for signatures and nominations, to prevent abuse of the system”. It further commits that the Federal Government will “provide equal access to the ballot and fair treatment in electoral processes, ensuring Independent Candidates can compete credibly”.

For the common man, the effect is direct. A Teacher in a Village, a Youth Leader in a Local Government Area, or a Trader with good reputation, will no longer need to beg a Party Chairman or raise millions of naira for a form. If they meet the Constitutional and Legal requirements, gather the required signatures, and pay the deposit, they can appear on the ballot and let the voters decide.

This removes the Middlemen who have turned party tickets into a business. It also means elections will be about ideas and service, and no longer about who has the deepest pocket or the strongest political godfather.

The Document also states that the deposit and verification rules are important to keep the ballot credible, and to prevent unserious Candidates from cluttering the process. At the same time, the commitment to equal treatment means that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, will be expected to treat Independent Candidates the same way it treats Party Candidates.

With this Electoral Reform, the ADC under Atiku is telling millions of Nigerians watching from the sidelines, that Political Office will no longer be reserved for Party Insiders. It will now be open to any qualified Nigerian who is ready to serve.
