What is going on with Labour and social media?

The Free Speech Union has been discussing internally whether Andy Burnham will be better or worse than Sir Keir Starmer when it comes to free speech.

We’ve concluded that he’ll be just as bad — if not worse.

Andy Burnham’s team has confirmed that he will push ahead with Starmer’s controversial social media ban for under-16s. We also know that the Technology Secretary, Liz Kendall, is looking into a potential ban on VPNs, which would put the UK in the same league as Iran, Iraq and North Korea.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport, led by Burnham ally and constituency neighbour Lisa Nandy, has also published a Green Paper, Watch This Space, which proposes forcing social media companies to prioritise the promotion of what the Government deems to be “trustworthy” news sources — namely content from public service broadcasters such as the BBC.

There is no evidence that Andy Burnham would abandon these plans when he enters Downing Street in just 13 days’ time.

This is a deeply concerning proposal and an extraordinary interference with freedom of association and free speech on social media — one that the Free Speech Union opposes wholeheartedly.

In another full-frontal assault on free speech and our right to engage in open political debate online, Labour’s Deputy Leader and close Burnham ally Lucy Powell wants to impose new legal duties through the Representation of the People Bill that would effectively treat private citizens as broadcasters and censor social media platforms during election periods.

This raises serious practical questions. Would individuals be prevented from expressing political views on social media during elections? The Free Speech Union also cannot see how such restrictions could realistically apply only to UK citizens. Surely they would have to extend to overseas users as well? President Trump and JD Vance would almost certainly have something to say about that.

This all seems to be part of Labour’s explanation for why it is struggling in the polls. Rather than recognising that people are concerned about issues such as mass uncontrolled migration, higher taxes, unemployment and soaring energy bills, Labour ministers appear to believe that voters are simply being misled by misinformation and disinformation on platforms such as X.

Last Thursday, Lisa Nandy flounced off X, citing an increase in abuse and the spread of misinformation and disinformation.

If Government ministers — particularly those responsible for the media — are concerned about misinformation, they should remain on the platform and challenge it. Trying to suppress it is not the answer.

As Louis Brandeis famously said, “The remedy to harmful speech is more speech, not enforced silence.”

Luton Bomb-Making Islamist Jailed.

A 23-year-old man from Luton obsessed with extremist material who hoarded chilling guides on how to manufacture deadly explosives has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.

Abdullah bin Yassir was stopped at Gatwick Airport in June 2025 after returning from Pakistan. Officers from the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit later raided his home and seized electronic devices containing a large collection of terrorist propaganda.

Forensic experts discovered seven detailed instructional manuals on bomb-making, including viable recipes for high explosives linked to Islamic State groups. Additional material glorified violence, praised past terror attacks, and included videos on using vehicles, knives and firearms in assaults.

His Honour Judge Anthony Leonard: "You had more than a passing interest in Islamic extremism. The offence is so serious that only a custodial sentence is justified."

Counter Terrorism Policing Assistant Chief Officer Hannah Wilkinson warned the case showed the serious risk of extremists hoarding practical instructions online that could cause serious harm.

This is far from an isolated incident in Luton, a town with a large Muslim population that has repeatedly been dubbed a hotbed of extremism.

In 2013, four local men, including Zahid Iqbal, plotted an al-Qaeda-inspired attack on a Territorial Army centre in the town using a remote-controlled toy car bomb. They were jailed for up to 16 years. Iqbal was reportedly cleared for early release earlier this year.

The banned Al-Muhajiroun network, with its links to Anjem Choudary, had deep roots in the town, recruiting and radicalising young men while staging provocative protests against British troops.

Several of the London 7/7 suicide bombers also had links to the town. One was caught on CCTV at the town’s station before the atrocity that killed 52 innocents.

Multiple other arrests over the years for terror plotting have cemented Luton’s reputation as a jihadi breeding ground, fuelled by a toxic mix of alienation, radical preachers, and failure by community leaders to stamp out extremism.

While the vast majority of Luton’s Muslim residents are peaceful and integrated, the recurring pattern of terror-related activity in the town cannot be ignored.

Islamist extremism continues to remain the primary threat to security in the United Kingdom, far outstripping any other ideology in scale, persistence and lethality according to repeated assessments by MI5 and counter-terror police.

Despite this politicians and authorities shy away from naming the problem, terrified of being branded Islamophobic and provoking accusations of racism.

This culture of denial and self-censorship allows this radical ideology to spread, with young men like Yassir being groomed into extremism online and on foreign trips as the authorities refuse to confront the threat head-on.

With a two-and-a-half-year sentence, and rules on early release and good behaviour, Yassir could walk free in as little as 10 to 15 months, potentially back on Britain’s streets while still in his mid-twenties and fully immersed in the toxic ideology that put him behind bars for stockpiling extremist material.

Islamist terrorists and extremists in the UK have shown disturbingly high rates of re-offending and recidivism, with many returning to radical networks or escalating their activities after serving time.

The same ideology that put Yassir in prison has repeatedly proven resilient behind bars and on the outside, producing repeat threats that stretch police and security services to breaking point.

Without tougher sentencing, proper deradicalisation, and an end to the political taboo around openly confronting Islamist extremism, the revolving door of terror-related offending will continue to endanger British lives, and towns like Luton will continue to produce individuals drawn to the deadly lure of Islamist extremism.
