Photos of women showing physical affection were not rare in the early 20th century. They appear in family albums, “found photograph” collections, and archives. Close female friendships were socially accepted and “romantic friendship” between women could include embraces and kisses without the same stigma that later periods attached to them. At the same time, same-sex romantic or sexual relationships were heavily stigmatized and often hidden, so images like this are now frequently shared as rare visual records of queer history. We cannot know the exact nature of this pair’s relationship from the photograph alone.
