📌 The @ICJ_Asia, together with @EarthRightsIntl, the International Human Rights Program at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law (@IHRP_UofT), and a community member from Kyauk Phyu Township, filed a complaint with Canada’s National Contact Point concerning the role of Canadian company Hatch Associates Ltd. in a major infrastructure project in Rakhine State, #Myanmar.
The complaint raises concerns regarding the environmental impact assessment process for the project in a conflict zone, including the absence of meaningful consultation with affected communities amid ongoing armed conflict and widespread human rights violations.

Bringing together practitioners, lawyers, victim representatives and institutional stakeholders from across LATAM, the consultation will explore how non-criminal mechanisms can advance accountability, recognition, and effective remedies for serious human rights violations.
The submission also underscores that serious violations of economic, social and cultural rights may amount to international crimes and calls for accountability and effective redress for victims.
In its submission to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR), the ICJ highlights that States remain bound by their obligations under the ICESCR during armed conflict, occupation, and post-conflict situations. https://t.co/m3i1SjRdVk

🇹🇭 #Thailand | On 22 May 2026, the @ICJ_Asia, together with partners, convened a seminar at the Parliament Building in Bangkok bringing together representatives from the judiciary, prosecution, government agencies, civil society, and affected communities to discuss reforms needed to address strategic lawsuits against public participation (#SLAPPs) in Thailand.
Speakers shared how SLAPPs continue to place heavy burdens on activists, journalists, human rights defenders, and others speaking out in the public interest, while highlighting persistent gaps in legal protections and procedures to prevent litigation from being used to silence public participation.

📌 The @ICJ_Asia welcomes the publication of the Thai Supreme Court President’s Recommendations on the adjudication of cases filed in bad faith on 29 May 2026, marking an important development in efforts to address strategic lawsuits against public participation (#SLAPPs) in #Thailand.
The guidance seeks to clarify the application of Section 161/1 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, including circumstances in which courts may dismiss cases brought in bad faith. While the development is welcome, significant gaps remain, particularly in relation to civil proceedings and public prosecutions, where many SLAPP cases continue to arise.
