During my own days at JNU, I was part of the movement called Youth for Equality, that fought the hypocrisy of reservation policies in India and their rampant politicisation, the ambiguous definition of backwardness and the collective tone -deafness and denial to address the real issues at hand.

As a Masters’ student, I contested the central panel election in 2007 and lost because the left vote consolidated. I finished second and YFE lost. We lost on the other three posts too.

Then the movement died down because the courts approved 27% quota for OBCs. When the movement had started from AIIMS, it was stayed.

None of the issues raised then have been addressed. Affirmative action is reduced to a political tool for getting votes — across party lines.

In 1997, this man was the ABVP National Secretary and was just about to join the Bharatiya Janata Party. There was a paper leak in Odisha and there was a major protest. This man participated in them. He was beaten by the police.

"We staged a protest against the Odisha government, in front of the secretariat. Around 1,500 students joined us there. While the protest was peaceful, the police charged against the activists. He was badly beaten up at that time. He had a few fractures too."

Who is he? Mr Dharmendra Pradhan. Imagine that Dharmendra Pradhan was protesting against paper leaks in 1997 and was beaten!

There is an amazing Indian Express article about him. Linked below. The irony? One of the interviewees says:

"under Pradhan's regime, the students will have more scope for dissent. "It is natural for students to be anti-establishment."

LoP Shri @RahulGandhi and @INCIndia continue to shamelessly exploit students as political tools to manufacture disruption during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Shri @RahulGandhi and @INCIndia chose to stage a dharna outside the Hon'ble Prime Minister's residence , causing inconvenience to the public and disregarding established security protocols.

Even after Government conveyed its readiness for a comprehensive discussion, the Congress chose political spectacle over democratic debate. Their objective was never solutions for students, it was disruption for political headlines

For Rahul Gandhi, this is not about students. This is about manufacturing confrontation after every genuine avenue for discussion has been opened.

Our Government remains 100% committed to discussing NEET and addressing every genuine concern of our youth on the floor of the House. The students of India deserve far better than being treated as props in a political campaign. They deserve certainty over chaos, solutions over slogans and responsibility over disruption.

We owe our students more than outrage. We owe them answers, reforms and accountability. That is exactly what our government remains committed to delivering.

The scenes being witnessed in the national capital today are an international embarrassment. Peaceful protests are a healthy facet of democracy. Protests turning into chaos, with the state using force are a sign of authoritarian regimes. NONE of this would have happened had the govt simply made Mr Pradhan resign honourably when the rot in the education sector became apparent with the NEET leaks. For decades in India, ministers have been known to own accountability and resign over lapses in their domains — railways ministers over accidents are a prime example. There is no shame in accepting a lapse and correcting course. I am against the idea of hunger strikes & of making a spectacle of genuine grievances. BUT in this, it is the Modi govt that is single-handedly responsible for turning us into an international circus. All because of its stubborn habit of just brazening all criticism out.
